An excellent source book for what is easily one of the best RPG systems out there. Easy rules with ability to customize your own spells. Highly recommended as a source book for anyone running a GURPS 3rd edition fantasy campaign.

Another good reference for making gaming more fun.

I agree with the previous reviewer except on a couple issues. I do not like the way demons are handled. They are made to be very weak against a truly good hearted person. I also think they could have made alot more mundane magic and high powered magicks. THey stuck to the middle gound and fleshed that out very well. There were very few high powered magicks explored.

GURPS Magic is one of the many competent supplements for Steve Jackson's Generic Universal Role Playing system.Or, handy when you want to be on the receiving end of the Game Master interdimensionally hi-jacking you from the present day setting into a magic using environment. Handy for him, anyway!

Great book - not only is it easy to use (complete spell index with costs, times, and effects), but it really expands on the original Basic Set spells! All the elements are available, as well as Making & Breaking college, Movement college, and information on powerstones. This book is the perfect device (sometimes in conjuction with The Grimoire) to round out any Mage, Wizard, or dabbler in the mystical arts. A worthy investment for any GURPS player.

Excellent! Very easy to read because of the concise content and flow of words. And the selected font, is easy on the eyes. Pastor and Author - D. Brian Shafer, in this Book #1 - EXILE OF LUCIFER, the first of 5 in a Book Series, entitled: 'Chronicles of the Host', inspires the reader into thinking about what may have happened in Heaven, before the Creation of the World and Mankind, as we know it. Specifically, within the Realm of Time in eons past..., before the Lord by the power of His - Holy Spirit, moved upon the face of the deep during the Genesis Creation (See Genesis 1:1-2 & 2:1-2 KJV). What exactly, went on in the Heavenly Realm before Lucifer the Archangel, the Anointed, Covering Cherub - who once upon a time, was the Supreme Worship Leader who Glorified God and was subsequently and permanently, thrown out of Heaven? We have some scriptural clues. For the Lord, speaking to Lucifer, said: "How art thou fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I WILL ascend into Heaven, I WILL exalt my throne above the stars (angels) of God: I WILL sit also upon the Mount of the Congregation, in the sides of the North: I WILL ascend above the heights of the clouds; I WILL be like the Most High. Yet, thou shalt be brought down to Hell, to the sides of the pit" (Isaiah 14:12-15 KJV). How did it come about that he was thrown out of Heaven, in the first place? For even Jesus Himself, said: "...I beheld satan (formerly Lucifer while still in Heaven) as lightening fall from Heaven" (Luke 10:18 KJV). Did satans' blind pride, jealousy, rebellion and utter scorn and contempt for the authority and sovereignty of the Lord his Creator, seal his doom? (Genesis 2:1 & Romans 1:25 KJV). According to the Lord, it did! Responding to satan's defiant five "I WILL's" in Isaiah 14:12-15 KJV, the Lord countered with His own five "I WILL's", saying: "I WILL cast thee (Lucifer) as profane out of the Mountain of God: I WILL destroy thee, O Covering Cherub from the midst of the Stones of Fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty (vanity), thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness (intellectual pride): I WILL cast thee to the ground (Earth - which is how he was able to be in the Garden of Eden, as an accursed snake who tempted Eve - See Genesis 3 KJV). I WILL lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee (in utter humiliation, global disgrace and public exposure). Thou (satan) has defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities (by continually and willfully sinning), by the iniquity of thy traffic (corruptions and rebellion); Therefore, will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I WILL bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of them that behold thee (utter destruction and public annihilation). All they that know thee among the people (satan worshippers, witches, warlocks, occult practitioners and those that chant mantras and channel demons, etc...), shall be astonished at thee: Thou shalt be a terror (grotesque in form and fashion), and never shalt thou be anymore" (Ezekial 28:16-19 KJV). Yup! It definitely looks like satan sealed his own, doom! But, what else did he say or do, that precipitated his permanent exile from behind the Pearly Gates? And how did it come about, that one-third of the Angelic-Heavenly Host..., was thrown out of Heaven, right along with him? Because, as the Holy Scripture goes on too attest, that when he was being thrown out, "...his (satans) tail drew the third part of the stars (like-minded angels, who became demons) of Heaven, and cast them to the Earth" (Revelation 12:4 KJV). Angels are compared to "stars?" Yes. Angels are continually basking in the brilliant Presence of the Lord, and His Countenance radiates His Glory and His Light. So much so, that it reflects off of them..., and they shine like "stars." For in the Book of Job, we find the scripture: "...when the Morning Stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy" (Job 38:7 KJV), Lucifer - having once been called "Son of the Morning" while he was still the Worship Leader in Heaven, led the angels in adoration of the Lord, because "stars" - in and of themselves, don't sing (Isaiah 14:12 KJV). He was once (past tense), an Archangel in Heaven who was always glorifying the Lord with song, worship and praise, so it only stems to reason that the "Morning Stars" (plural) are angels, as well (Job 38:7 KJV). So satan, the once "Morning Star" and now his hideous "morning stars" (angels who had corrupted themselves and rebelled with him and subsequently became demons), were evicted, right along with him. For the devil is very deceptive. For "...satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (II Corinthians 11:14 KJV). He is very elusive like a chameleon, who can change into a snake... just like he did in the Garden of Eden and then... just as quickly, he transforms himself into a magnetic light. Especially, when people die and are miraculously brought back to life. Not every "light" after death, is of God. Light bulbs shine but they aren't holy. It could be subtle "satanic light" that is very enticing and seductive. With the objective of luring you into death and cheating you out of life, before your time. And satans' expulsion is further disclosed and confirmed, because the Holy Word, says: "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the devil and satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out in earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:9 KJV). And just how does the Messanger Archangel - Gabriel, and the Warrior Archangel - Michael, the leading General of the remaining two-thirds of Angels, fit into all that went on up there? For without a doubt, "...there was war in Heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; And the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found anymore in Heaven" (Revelation 12:7-8 KJV). So, who found out that satan initiated the rebellion which climaxed itself into a catastrophic, Heavenly Battle, that tore the Kingdom of Heaven into an Eternal Divide? And, how does a once... Holy Angel, who served the Lord, suddenly turn into a hideous demon? Who betrayed, who? Who said, what? How? Where in Heaven? And when? Intrigue, drama, action and adventure a plenty, and possibilities galore of how... the once united, Heavenly Kingdom of God and the now... kingdom of satan, came about? A wonderful, creative, fictional account which is based on actual, true-life, Holy Scriptures which will make you want to read this riveting, written endeavor in one sitting. It's an exciting, eye-opener and you will definitely want to read the next four sequels, no sooner you finish reading this one. Fascinating and thrilling, cosmic reading which will educate, enlighten and broaden your spiritual interest. A keeper for your home library collection. Nina Kish

A book I got as a free Kindle download recently. It tells the story of how Lucifer came to be tossed out of heaven. Some will probably deride it as religious nonsense. People of a more religious bent might well think of it as irreligious. For me it is just fiction, just a book. I don't see that it even pretends to be much else.I have to admit much of the tale is hard to believe but it is written well enough that I found it readable. That's all I really care about.

3.25 StarsUpfront I will admit that this was my first foray into the realm of Christian fiction. Overall, it was not that bad and did inspire me to explore the genre further. However, it would be dishonest of me to say that reading the book was life changing. It was entertaining enough to finish, but the lack of rich characterization left me feeling cold to most of the characters. Unfortunately, at times the heavenly host seemed less like the enlightened spiritual beings that filled my childhood fascinations of angels and more like politicians pandering for status and rank.I did admire the obvious passion for the subject that the author has.MadGiles

The reader will be caught up into the story from the first page. I know the basic "Story" of course, but to read it as told in fictional format was cool. When I first read this book a few years back, I kept thinking how much all my friends - no matter who they are or what they believe - would enjoy reading it. The author has a way with storytelling that just draws you in. I like Stephen King because, no matter what he writes about, he can keep you reading. I now think of Shafer as the Christian answer to King (as a storyteller, I mean). I love that he wrote this from the viewpoint of the angels. This reminded me of "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis.

I really enjoy reading books where authors take Biblical and other historical characters and make them "come alive" in the culture, history, and politics of their time, to see how they were influenced to become the often larger than life individuals we imagine them to be. It helps me to keep in mind that God can do great things through anyone who is willing to submit to Him, no matter their circumstances; and this particular book reminded me that Satan can do the same. What particularly struck me was how smooth and subtle Lucifer's progression into the depths of evil was - it was a slide down a slippery slope, and showed how even if we start out (or call ourselves starting out) with the best of intentions, if we are not careful we can easily be misled. I was struck by how easily one third of the angels and some of the elders were misled. It was definitely a reminder to me that I really need to get back to absorbing God's word!A couple of reasons why I gave this book a 4 rather than a 5:I did find Eve's character to be a bit under-developed and annoyingly childlike - I felt there should have been more to her character. I also would have liked to see more of the relationship between A'dam and Eve.I wasn't able to make the connection that the Zoa were the four living creatures mentioned in Revelation 5, and I am still researching the role of these creatures as spoken of in the Bible. No doubt I need to study more, but do those creatures actually fall between God and the elders? I see that some reviewers noted some errors of fact (thank you). That aside, I thought the author did a good job of showing the roles of the different beings (different types of angels, elders, etc.) - with the exception of the Zoa.I was disappointed that my Kindle version of this book had lots of typos - on virtually every page - make that section(!) - words were sepa rated, which was distracting. I was also disappointed to find that the second volume is not available for Kindle (I put in a request to have it "Kindle-ized), although volumes 3 and 4 are.Overall a very good book and well worth the read, particularly if this type of reading helps you keep things in perspective (IMHO).

This was not at all what I expected! I honestly thought it would just be girls having adventures while camping; and while it is, it also isn't. There is a whole other story going on and it's all bizarre and supernatural. Strange things are afoot and the poor Lumberjanes keep stumbling into weirdness. It's kinda like a female cast of the Goonies meets the Brothers Winchester. They are quirky and fun characters. Their reaction to things and their terminology is so 80's! It's like stepping back into my childhood. I got this because I thought it would be something fun that both my daughter and myself could read and enjoy. Well, this was a really fun read, and I have a feeling my daughter will like it even more than I did!

Beware the Kitten Holy is a funny story. I love the way this graphic novel is drawn and colored. I like that it's very vibrant. I like that the images seem to be kind of wide even though they are cramped into a small space. I think that helped add to the whole “Great Outdoors” feel of the story. This story is not what I thought it was going to be. I feel like this story was really written for maybe teens or pre-teens because the content seems, kind of, juvenile but in a good way. It was very simple; kind of, innocent in the way the magical elements were presented. Still, adults could totally read and enjoy this if they don’t take it too seriously. So, the first thing that I like was the whole female wilderness survivalists who are kids, thing. That's like two things already that really appeal to me. We've got young characters who are also females surviving out in the wilderness which is kind of against the status quo. I love the fact that this story is so funny. I think its humor and the drawings really send the story over the top. Without there being so much humor and without the images being so vibrant, I probably would have given this story a lower rating. It's not a complicated story but it isn’t that simple either. Some people may just not get it.What I really liked about the story is the constant theme of friendship. You have this group of young survival girls who are basically tormenting their camp counselor, which anyone who's ever gone to camp, can relate to. This group of friends, whether they are or aren’t traumatizing their camp counselor, stick together. They help each other out. They laugh at things that are funny and they can poke fun at each other while also building each other up. None of these girls are vindictive towards one another. They're all very different and they seem to accept each other for their differences.I also liked the Indiana Jones/Nancy Drew mashup happening within the girl’s wilderness adventures. Even when they do cross paths with other creatures such as wolves or even boys, the girls seem to find a way to have the upper-hand, whether planned out or through total coincidental calamity. Some readers might find the content to be a little off-putting considering the age range for readers. It's hard for me to clearly say that this is a graphic novel written for teenage girls between the ages of 13 and 16 because I really don’t know; that’s just what I assumed. I will offer two warnings for potential readers. (1) While this is a very light and fluffy story, there are some dark and or disturbing moments.(2) *SPOLIER here* Also, two of the characters seem like they might have a crush on each other, which may be a matter of concern for conservative parents.**Still, all in all, this wasn’t a groundbreaking, earth-shattering phenomenon, but it was highly entertaining.I’d recommend it to comic fans, feminists, and anyone who appreciates a funny story that’s just a little outside the box.

I didn’t enjoy this one. I think the art is wonderful and the colors are beautifully vibrant, but I was not intrigued by the story, it bored me. Maybe I didn’t enjoy it because it’s not meant for my group (I’m 21), but that hasn’t been a problem before so I don’t know. Maybe an adolescent would like it. Again, I’m not saying this is terrible and you should stay away, it’s not and you should try it if you think you’ll like it. I just personally didn’t enjoy it and forced myself to finish reading it. Will not be continuing the series.

Cute and exciting. So far this book has been like an all-girl Gravity Falls. This graphic novel is basically the five girls you see on the cover at a camp in the middle of some magic-infested woods. Something weird--that no one else seems to notice--is going on so these girls are trying to unravel this mystery and do so by tramping around the forest, participating in camp activities, and more. It's a good book and I plan to by the next ones as well.I enjoyed it and my little sister (10yr) did too. Basically, it's a good book for a variety of ages.

Yes. Yes. Yes. More of this. With a young, teen daughter who loves art and illustration, I'm so happy that books like Lumberjanes, Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl are being created. Fun, challenging and engaging without crossing too hard for "effect" in what could be sensitive situations, Lumberjanes takes young and old readers alike on a fun journey and leaves you wanting to know what happens next. The art style is fantastic, guest covers and illustrations I've seen are refreshing and the character writing is fresh and crisp. A+++

I bought this for my 8 year old sister for Christmas and she absolutely loved it. She read it all in one sitting and almost immediately started asking for the next book. After my little sister's great reception of it I decided to read it myself, and I loved it too (for a reference point, I'm 19). It's full of magic and adventure, and the protagonists are exactly the hard core lady types that every young girl should have as a role model. The pop culture references keep it interesting and realistic as well.My sister is 8 and she had no issues reading this book, but she's also an advanced reader for her age. I'd say most kids could get full enjoyment out of this in the 9+ range, and adults at any age!

Noelle Stevenson's Lumberjanes are an amazing troupe of hardcore lady-types having a paranormal Girl Scout-esque experience (now with more monsters! new and improved badges!). All the details are well thought-out, from the naming of the characters (April, Mal, Molly, Ripley, Jo, Rosie, etc.) to the types of paranormal and supernatural encounters (Bear Woman! Scouting Lads!). Inclusive and diverse, Lumberjanes is sure to attract readers of a variety of ages, which is not a surprise for Noelle Stevenson's work. She writes and creates real people in very fantastic situations, but with a lighthearted, funny tinge. 1000% recommend.

Arrowsmith is possibly Sinclair Lewis's greatest accomplishment. That is no meager compliment; Lewis is one of the greatest of American twentieth century novelists. He was a contemporary of Upton Sinclair and Jack London. Like them, he was an unapologetic socialist. But, unlike Upton Sinclair, his socialism was cleanly understated. He wove his social conscience cleanly into the story line. Upton Sinclair preached it, beating the reader over the head with it.In Arrowsmith, Lewis intricately details the path through life of a dedicated man of science, torn between pure science, healing, and money-making. Often, his choices are seemingly random, dictated mostly by chance. The writing is, as always, descriptive and compelling. As with almost all of his work, it is no easy, one-night's plaything. The characters are numerous, each with his or her's own substance and role. They come and go throughout his life, occupying distinct places in his journey. The plot is sometimes slow, but often with surprising, often cruel, twists of fate. Each can come as quite a jolt to the reader.Lewis has a unique ear for dialogue; it is easy for the casual reader to miss the sarcasm and irony for which he is famous. But beneath the irony there is always his understated plea for the common man; decency and kindness are woven inextricably into the story.

I was motivated to read this book because Sinclair Lewis is regarded as one of the best American naturalist writers and this novel won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for literature. Arrowsmith is regarded unique because it is a novel centered around scientific research. I was expecting to be swept away by a novel that integrated scientific research with ethical issues. I was hoping to find admirable but flawed characters, struggling to keep their souls while working in a complicated world of scientific research.I thought I would watch a young man in a culture where people had to reconcile adherence to scientific integrity with the desire for results, fame, and money. I was hoping that this book would leave me with the feeling I got watching “October Sky” as a child, but instead it felt more like an episode of Lena Dunhum’s “Girls.”The story begins when Martin Arrowsmith is a young man, about 18 years old, living in Elk Mills in the fictional midwestern US state of Winnimac. He goes to a decent state school and begins to study medicine. At school he works under the German scientist Dr Gottlieb, a scientist of passionate integrity in the field of Bacteriology. Arrowsmith is Gottlieb’s protégé and we see that there is an exciting future for the two of them to work together. Unfortunately, the two have a falling out that I did not really understand, and they part ways. I think the falling out had something to do with Arrowsmith’s immaturity, which bored me to the point where I didn’t bother to really understand it. I would have been more interested if it had to do with differing opinions on scientific processes or ethics. While this was going on, Arrowsmith had become “accidentally” engaged to two women at the same time. He can’t even make up his mind about who he wants to marry, so he invites the two women out to dinner- and let’s them decide! This is a good example of how haphazardly Arrowsmith lives his life. Martin Arrowsmith’s actions throughout the novel were sometimes motivated by passion for one thing or another, and he never established a hieraracy for what would be the most important. He was always motivated by the feelings of the moment. If he was pursuing one value and things got tough, he would abandon it for another value.I only made it 62% of the way through the book before giving up. I was so disappointed about the sloppy way this young man lives his life. Oddly, I left the book when Martin was the exact same age as me- 32 years old. I would not recommend reading this novel. It isn’t fun to read and doesn’t leave you feeling inspired. The only reason I would read this novel is you have an intellectual career, and need to read this novel as a part of a required education.

Bottomm Line First : Sinclair Lewis’s Arrowsmith was something of a break through novel. It is considered the first novel to directly address science and medicine as a plot driver. It is also a character study but of a particular kind of person. Not just a scientist, or a medical practitioner, but a person with an avocation. Lewis allows us to mature with a very believable, flawed human as he acts as a common, everyman finding and facing his destiny. Martin Arrowsmith Is not an outsized hero. He is someone rather like us, but still not of us. Martin Arrowsmith is an everyman and the question is, is it in us, through him to be a hero? Arrowsmith is a recommended read for almost any audience. It can be irreverent toward religion, but there is a respect for the religious. There is no bad language and no violence. However this is perhaps too thoughtful for the young and the details of the plague can be unsettling. Do not let the medical vocabulary throw you off, Arrowsmith is something anyone can read and enjoy. We meet Arrowsmith as a very young person, already fascinated by medicine. He is the friend of one of the local medical doctors, an otherwise broken drunkard who allows this young person to perform as a town medical man. More so than could happen in our time. Next we go with him to a remote and minimally established public college/medical school. Here his performance will vary based on the kinds of influence one could expect in a crowd of immature and unsophisticated college kids.Among the things that make this extended introduction a superior example of writing is that the real theme is introduced and isolated in ways that will not be fully realized in any one place before the end. For example Arrowsmith spends a summer performing the hard physical labor of a lineman and enjoying this turn. That is, he is not to be criticized as too pampered to handle real work.Arrowsmith is a modern version of Pilgrims Progress. Along the way he will find what may seem to the reader as paradise, only to have Lewis take us one step deeper where we may find we, the reader has accepted Vanity Fair over our hero’s real goal.

Amazon.com Review

Featured Recipe: Katniss's Favorite Lamb Stew with Dried Plums "Katniss's favorite food from the Capitol is the delicious lamb stew with dried plums. It's no coincidence that this is her favorite dish. Soups and stews are common foods in the Seam, and this healthy and filling dish likely reminded her of the home and family she desperately missed." (The Hunger Games, Chapter 9)   Yield 8-10 servings 5 pounds lamb fillet, shoulder or leg, cut into 2-inch pieces 2 teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper ½ cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 large onion, chopped ½ cup water 4 cups beef stock 2 teaspoons white sugar 3 teaspoons brown sugar 3 cups diced carrots 1 cup diced zucchini 1½ cups diced celery 2 large onions, diced 3 potatoes, cubed 5 cups dried plums 2 teaspoons dried thyme 3 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary 2 teaspoons chopped fresh basil 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley 2 bay leaves 1 cup ginger ale Place lamb, salt, pepper, and flour in a large mixing bowl. Toss to coat meat evenly. Heat olive oil in a large pan and brown the meat, working in batches if you have to. Remove lamb to a side plate. Pour off fat, leaving ¼ cup in the pan. Add the garlic and onion and sauté until the onion becomes golden. Deglaze frying pan with the ½ cup water, taking care to scrape the bottom of the pan to stir up all of the tasty bits of meat and onion. Cook to reduce liquid slightly, then remove from heat. Place the lamb and garlic-onion mixture in a large stockpot. Add beef stock and sugar, stirring until sugars are dissolved. Bring mixture to a boil, cover, and simmer for 1½ hours. Add the vegetables, dried plums, herbs, and ginger ale to the pot. Simmer for 30-45 minutes, or until meat and vegetables pierce easily with a fork.

i'm a self described Bookworm Nerdgirl Fatkid which means I love to read, eat, and read cookbooks - SO the fact there is a Hunger Games "unofficial" cookbook, was one I couldnt pass up (plus the digital version was cheaper than the actual book)the recipes are pretty straight forward, simplified a lil here and there, making ingredients more easily attainable. its def a fun, kind of cheeky twist on a movie tie inalso a nice little touch is the commentary from the "sponsor" about several of the recipes :)I recommend this purchase for a future Hunger Games themed dinner party/movie nite!

This book was such a cute idea, that I had to have it. I'm a big fan of the Hunger Games series, so this cookbook was a fun addition to my kitchen. I didn't recognize all the recipes as pieces from the book, but I think that's because some are just 'inspired by' the series. The ones I've made so far are pretty tasty, and it makes having a HG themed party a snap, foodwise. I also bought this used, so I definitely don't regret the money spent- but, I bet a new copy (with non-bent edges and a clean front) would be an even greater addition to a collection.

Some of the best recipes I have ever made... it also makes me feel like I am sending a parcel into the games.

The girl I gave it to loved it so much, it was the perfect gift!

came in the mail tonight, i love it! simple as that. i actually made three items from the cookbook, and they we're amazing!! omg so good. i had the pink mashed pos, with a grilled stuffed groosling, and chai lette. it was wonderful, having a birthday party, and making some of the food out of the book, i'd also like to remind any silly parents that buy this from their "hg super fan" child. it's not for kids, it's more for 16 and up! not 12 to 15 it'll bore them and they'll get tired quite fast. i'm 18 and i love this book, it's wonderful. their's a few recpi's that call for "wild dog" it's a punt, lolololol. for anyone who gets mad over it should laugh their joking it says to use a red meat. c:

I bought this cookbook before our book club discussed "Hunger Games." We have a combined book discussion and potluck, so I shared recipes, and it was a lot of fun. Many were introduced to quinoa -- one warning: the recipe for quinoa and black bean salad says it serves 4 to 6, but after 8 hearty servings, we still have half left. I would cut the amount of quinoa in half for both the quinoa recipes -- 1-1/2 cups makes quite a lot.

Wish this had some pictures or visual interest of some kind. I like my cookbooks a little more aesthetically engaging.

My son ordered this as a gift for his girlfriend. The shipping was super-quick and it's a nice looking book. I flipped through it, and it seems like a ton of recipes that no one will ever use, especially the teens that it's (I assume?) marketed toward. Rabbit? Really? Anyway, if you have a teen girl in your life who is crazy about Hunger Games and enjoys cooking, maybe she'll like this book. I sure hope so!

#330,960 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The first two chapters of the book deal with the similarities between the cosmology and philosophy of Hindu religion and Quantum Mechanics as it relates to the observer/consciousness. These first two chapters suggest that consciousness is fundamental and inherently non-local in nature as is Quantum Mechanics. The third chapter looks at how biological organisms and their brains may involve quantum mechanical and chaotic dynamics and how these processes may assist with the survival of the organism. Particularly, King suggests that weak quantum measurements and quantum entanglement may be utilised by organisms in order for them to exercise free will and navigate future events. In the fourth chapter, J.R. Smythies puts forward his "materialist dualist" thesis that conscious experience exists in a phenomenal space-time that intersects with physical space-time.Chapter five looks at the notion put forward by materialist views of mind that consciousness is just a epiphenomena of the brain. The writer contends that observer effects in quantum theory along with our conceptual understanding of some neuropsychological disorders entail that scientist must take conscious or mental properties as casually real effects in the world.Chapter six takes a look at the philosopher Kant's view of time as fundamental to how the mind has knowledge of the world. This chapter goes on to look at how hallucinatory states as seen in psychiatric and neural disorder can cause distortions in our temporal experiences and our sense of reality. This chapter asks if hallucinatory experiences can give us other realities that are commeasurable with our own?Chapter seven is a brief chapter that posits that consciousness occurs in the brain in discrete moments - approximately 4 times per second. The writer argues that these moments of consciousness are connected by "consciousness vectors" - where a vector describes something with a direction and magnitude. The idea is not very much elaborated on in the chapter.Chapter 8 looks how the psychological presentation of the "Now" or present differs in its representational nature from the psychological future and past. The writer argues that the mental representation of the future and past leads to an abstract "timeless" depiction of the physical world. In Chapter 9, Corballis looks at what is referred to us "mental time travel" or the psychological ability to remember the past and imagine the future. Corballis argues that Mental Time Travel evolved naturally from Evolution and that animals may have the capacity for Mental Time Travel but possibly not in regards a sense of self or self narrative. Corballis argues that in humans language involves and evolves Mental Time Travel. The chapter also looks at the hippocampus' involvement in MTT in the brains of both humans and animals.Chapter 10 extends on the previous chapter by looking at "chronethesia" which is the more narrative aspect of Mental Time Travel possessed by humans and involves the subjective projection of the self in time in relation to the body and our knowledge of death or our own mortality.Chapter 11 sites Corballis' examination of episodic memory and sense of self and argues that examples of mental or brain disorder such as schizophrenia and alzheimers show how episodic memory and sense of self can come apart. In disorders such as Alzheimers someone may retain as sense of "I" or acting self but lose a conceptual sense of self or a "me" sense of self.Chapter 12 is a short article on the hippocampus, episodic memory and mental time travel. Evidence is sited for similar hippocampal structures used in both humans and birds for spatial processing and imagination.Chapter 13 looks at how past, present or future orientated thinking in people can influence personality traits, social and cultural structures. The chapter also looks at the different neural structures associated with past, present or future orientated thinking.Chapter 14 is a long chapter that looks at the notion of time in physics and temporal anomalies in conscious experience. The chapter explores: time as understood in Einstein Special and General Relativity; Quantum theory - looking at quantum entanglement and the Everett Interpretation of Multiple Universes; Godel or Rotating Universes and Tachyons - that involve violations of causation or so-called "backward" causation; the psychological phenomena of Deja Vu and evidence for human precognition.Chapter 15 explores the psychiatrists Carl Jung's notion of Synchronicity (meaningful coincidences) and suggests that they could be explained by quantum entanglement. The chapters suggest that Freudian unconscious, pre-conscious and conscious states may be entangled "qu-bit" states in the brain. The article is brief and although it states it entails a "no-collapse" model of quantum processes it does not elaborate why. Nor does it explain why the writers feel that "mental states are non-reducible (just correlated) to brain states."Chapter 16 looks at an Everett "Many Worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics where perceptions or mental events are fundamental. The writer argues that quantum theory entails that there are many worlds or "channels" of experienced events which can be explicated better with addition of what he calls an "anthropic quotient" which is a measure of the rate of conscious thought or thoughts per unit of time.Chapter 17 looks again at time as in relates to Einstein's theories and the "Many Worlds" model of Quantum Mechanics. This chapter is written by the same person who wrote chapter seven (Joseph) and covers much of the same territory with some of the same paragraphs copied verbatim. However, the chapter focuses more on how the Many Worlds Model of QM can be used to account for possible temporal paradoxes created by time travel.Chapter 18 closes with a purely physics perspective of how time travel may occur with black holes and/or worm holes. Amongst other ideas, this chapter looks at how the gravitational effects of black holes could create "tears" in the fabric of space-time which cause time to travel backwards or from future to past thus creating mirror universes.Overall this book is a fascinating read for anyone interested in questions regarding the nature of consciousness, time and reality. However, all the chapters in this book should be seen as a brief introduction into many of the contributing writers ideas. One feels that hours if not years could be spent elaborating on and challenging some of the ideas in this book. After all, the ideas in this book cover a vast and controversial scope of science, philosophy and psychology.

This is not a book for those who simply are curious about the physics of time and space. It is a collection of papers by a number of authors that are mostly metaphysical musings on the interaction of "mind and cosmos". Some of the speculations by authors are interesting and novel, but they fail the measure of scientific verification entirely. Others are quite good and to the point and therefore reach other conclusions. I find it hard to read speculations about quantum interactions of the mind, when as yet we have no real concept (Gestalt) of such an entity. Many papers seemed to posit a clear role for the mind of being quantum entangled with its environment when that has yet to be established realistically. Others claimed the the more metaphysical pronouncements of Heisenberg and von Neuman as mostly established fact when they are mostly gospel. However, I read it with some interest to learn what the philosophers of today are grappling with.

Great book - I'm Not a physicist but this is written with folks like me in mind. Thought provoking and interesting.I recommend:)

Very interesting.

This writer and architect is brilliant! He is a great writer!! He explains how he designs houses and why. This is rare. The last "rave review" (and I do rave when I find a really great book) was about "Villa" by John Saladino. Both of these different, and brilliant architects are able to explain why they design the spaces that they do! In understandable language to a layperson! It makes sense; and they explain it!That to me; is an additional rare talent to add to the talent that they possess as architects! (and in John's case; also an "interior designer")This is a really great book! I think the best thing about "classical architecture"; (in our age of "hideous", my opinion, of course, "McMansions" despoiling the countryside in every state); this man explains why classical architecture makes so much sense.......and why to go there if you are building a house! As a decorator; for many years, I have been asked to look at "McMansions"; and asked if I can "make this cozy"? My answer, always; unfortunately, is : "No, I cannot." Because it is impossible. The proportions are wrong, the ceilings are too high, the windows are all wrong, on and on. And they are simply unworkable as "comfortable family houses"; which is my goal as a decorator! This book may contribute to "Stop the Madness!!" I can only hope!It is a treasure!

It is hard to overstate my enthusiasm about the work of Gil Schafer, architect. His projects are exceptionally well planned and beautifully built. I impatiently waited all summer for this book of his houses to be published and it was more than worth the wait.Being a Rizzoli publication, the book itself is a magnificent product with high paper quality and outstanding picture size and clarity. It has a certain heft that tells you that no material shortcuts were taken. The content is exactly what I expected; a fascinating narrative from Schafer on his architectural journey and the philosophy which guides his designs. It is so refreshing to see such beautiful classical architecture being created in the 21st century. There are four chapters focusing on particular buildings; Schafer's own Hudson Valley country house, which is a fine classic Greek Revival temple; a new traditional country house; a renovation of an early 20th century Nashville home and the staggering restoration of Gatewood, a phenomenal antebellum townhouse in Charleston, South Carolina, which with the lightest, most sensitive touch, is now fully functional for the modern age. This book immediately vaults to the top five amongst a pretty extensive architectural library. For the reader interested in classical architecture this is required reading. Oh that I was in a tax bracket to commission a custom designed home of the first order, Gil Schafer would be my architect.

I own and have read over 75 design books over the past several years, and by far this is one of the best. I truly admire architects who design real houses with rooms where furniture can actually be placed. The photos are excellent and this entire book is of such high quality. Both the interior and exterior shots are incredible, and reflect the full design concept of the home from landscaping to interior design. My only regret is that I can't afford Mr. Schafer to design and build my home!!I would not recommend this book to those who favor contemporary design or the "austere" mid-century modern look, unless they are looking to move away from that design concept.

What makes older homes so much more inviting? Is it the detailing, the craftsmanship, the patina of age? The answer is "yes," and so much more. This book clearly explains why older homes have such allure, and at the same time details how to build a "new old house" or renovate a property to work with today's lifestyles. This is so much more than a picture book, even though the photos are beyond beautiful. If you are fascinated by the "new old house" movement, this book is a must buy.

It really doesn't get any better than this. Gil Schafer's new book does everything that one hopes it will do, and with considerable polish. From his discussions of his background and design philosophy to descriptions of the planning and execution of the four projects presented, it's obvious that Mr. Schafer is a master of his craft and loves what he does. This volume showcases his incredible skill in handling 21st century spaces in a traditional American idiom, and his perception of the details that imbue new, functional construction with the look and feel of age and provenance.Aside from a typo in the book's forward mentioned by another reviewer, it's obvious that this one had a great deal of attention on its way to press. The presentation is neat and tight, the projects thoroughly photographed and, wonder of all, nothing is discussed in the prose that we can't see in the photos. Add to that the work of some first-string interior designers, and this is one book that I couldn't put down - and to which I have returned repeatedly with enthusiasm. From the comprehensive photography and floor and site plans, to the sensitive and expository text, the reader is only left wanting for a sequel. Hopefully Mr. Schafer won't keep us waiting too long.

Beautiful homes and I enjoyed reading each chapter. Looking forward to his new book!

this is by far the best book i have bought...perhaps ever.i have read the book from cover to cover several times.i have always had a great interest in architecture and thisbook really feeds the appetite. a book everyone who buys ahome in one of our suburban subdivisions should read priorto purchase. i hope that gil schaefer will write anothergreat book.p.h.reed

I received this book as a gift and thought ho hum at first glance. I have completely changed my mind. This book is outstandingly written and gives the reader a real appreciation of the soul it takes to made a masterpiece home, from the land selection to the smallest detail of decor placement. Thank you Gil Schaefer III for a brilliantly written book.

The big note to start this review is that if you watched the movie, fine—it was entertaining and you gotta love the actors. However, if you want the real scoop on the real Monuments Men, you must read the book. I’m not sure why Hollywood (does most of what it does) decided to change the characters or make light of the contributions put forth by Rose Valland by intimating her having a crush on Matt Damon’s character. The Monuments Men were courageous and enterprising, pushing to be in active war zones in their pursuit of art of every kind. They worked closely with residents and a broad array of military personnel. Where the bigwigs so often took the credit—shock—these were the men behind the scenes doing their job and saving millions of pieces of art from the destruction of Hitler’s madness. The book follows the team from their inception to the close of their work. The author, Robert M. Edsel, did a brilliant job solidly taking us along the path of the battles while not losing sight of the point of the story. You may find yourself doing what I did throughout the book—gasping in horror as more and more of what Hitler was doing comes to light. I knew about his confiscation of artwork from everyone, everywhere, and yet I was astounded to find out even more of his evil egomaniacal ways. There are descriptions of the men—and Rose—that I noted along the way, James Rorimer, “He had no practice in failure, and he had no intention of starting now.” Ms. Valland, “Destiny is not one push, she thought as she waited to cross a quiet street on that cold Paris evening years later, but a thousand small moments that through insight and hard work you line up in the right direction, like a magnet does with metal shavings.” You’ll enjoy reading about Harry Ettlinger’s journey with the Monuments Men. A German Jew with American citizenship, he served bravely along with the others. George Stout, “’The sun is fine and, after the rat race, I begin to remember that I am myself and not merely a set of functions.’” Having been blessed with the experience of standing in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam—a haven of art—reading that paintings were taken from there made me sad and appreciate at all that was saved. It took them six years for the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives to return what they’d found to the proper owners. This book reads like an adventure story and will keep you interested the entire way through. If you like history and heroes, read this book, don’t just watch the movie.

One of the most enjoyable aspects to the study of history is always finding new stories. Even when you think you know a lot about a field you find something new and enjoyable. That one of the many reasons that I enjoyed Monuments Men so much. Robert Edsel has provided us with a look at an area of World War II studies that has gone virtually unnoticed for nearly 70 years. The men and women of the MFAA (Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives) Division served an almost unknown, but incredibly valuable part in the war against the destructive evil of Nazism. When Hitler's forces overran Europe they set about looting the national artistic treasures in a methodical manner. Priceless treasures were pillaged from the museums and galleries of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and other European nations. All property belonging to Jews were taken. Hitler's dream was to create an enormous museum that would be the envy of the entire world. Instead he launched the most destructive war in history. The allies were aware of the cultural heritage in the areas that they would be fighting. This is why the MFAA was created. The original MFAA officers were tasked with traveling into the war zones and identifying historic sites that needed to be preserved. The stories of what these men accomplished is truly amazing. Time after time they were able to save important buildings from being destroyed. As the book progresses we see another dimension of their work. They began to investigate the Nazi looting. Their job shifted from simply protecting buildings from destruction to locating stolen works of art. At times the book resembles an action thriller story. The theft of priceless works of art. The heroic civilians who work undercover to spy on the Nazis. The small band of men rushing from place to place to save these priceless objects.I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the subject, I enjoyed the writing, I enjoyed everything about it. Robert Edsel has done an excellent job of sharing this important story with us. Perhaps there is no greater evidence of the statement that those who do not study history are bound to repeat it. We never studied the important work of the Monuments Men. As a result the allies were not prepared when Iraq was invaded in 2003. The looting of those priceless antiquities could have been avoided by simply employing a group like the MFAA. Perhaps this book will help to raise awareness so that tragedies like the Iraq museum will not happen again.

I preordered this volume from Amazon on Feb. 7th this year. The publishing date of April 3rd came and went, and there was no action on my order. Over time it became apparent that Amazon didn't have any copies. So I eventually ordered a copy from a 3rd party seller. Now that I finally have the volume in hand, I'm very pleased to have it in my library. It is a great record of the late Storm Thorgerson's iconic work for Pink Floyd. The volume is of very good quality and the art work reproduction is outstanding. There is a lot more copy than I expected, as Storm comments on the images we have all come to know and love--the prism, the handshake, the flying pig, the river of beds--telling us the stories behind the images. I have a pretty good collection of Floyd material, and so a good deal of the background info is not new to me, but it's nevertheless welcome to have it all included in one handsome volume.Surprisingly, for a 5th edition, I have so far found two rather strange errors. When addressing "Meddle", Storm refers to the track "Breathless," which I have to believe should be "Fearless", and just a couple pages later refers to a Robert Plant album of "A Question of Balance", which doesn't seem to exist (although there is a Moody Blues album by that name).Fans of Pink Floyd and rock-and-roll images generally will definitely like this 5th edition. It's gorgeous.

Wow... what an awesome trip through the history of Pink Floyd, by the man who created or helped create so many of the band's iconic album covers and artwork. Not much material from The Wall (and none from The Final Cut), but I knew that going in, as Storm was not involved with those albums. Overall, it's a great tribute not only to an incredible band, but of Storm and his team who worked amazing magic and did much of it the hard way. Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of Floyd or just great album artwork.

What can I say about this kind of work that hasn't been said before. The information contained in this pages and the artwork is JUST SUPERB. Idela for the Pink floyd die hard fans and graphic designers, you are gonna find a source of inspiration here.

This is a beautiful hard cover book with some amazing photos! I'm blown away by Storm's work and artistic ability he was truly a genius. Would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Floyd as much as I do!!!

This is a great book. I bought it for my son for Christmas. It's a nice big size, and it has a lot of really nice pictures. Very happy with this purchase. A great gift for any Pink Floyd fan.

Present he loves it.. nice book...

informative!!

The iconic look of Pink Floyd by the artist himself. A win-win for any Pink Floyd fan.
