Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of August 2018: A deep, complicated love between two very different women lies at the heart of Frances De Pontes Peebles’ new novel, The Air You Breathe. Dores and Graça grow up on the same sugar-cane plantation in Northern Brazil, but while Dores is the plain but clever daughter of a lowly worker, Graça is the spoiled, lovely daughter of the house, who demands that Dores become her playmate and accomplice. Their unequal friendship continues as the girls’ passion for samba takes them to Rio and eventually, Los Angeles, where Graça’s voice and Dores’s songs bring them international fame – for a time. Peebles’s story, inspired in part by the lives of Carmen Miranda and lesbian songwriter Chavela Vargas, lightly traces the history of Brazil from the 1930s to the 1950s as well as Hollywood’s prevailing attitudes toward foreign (and female) artists. Her sensitive, poetic writing evokes Brazil’s rough beauty and the sensual lure of the music that shapes Dores and Graça’s lives. This is a gorgeous, immersive novel about a bond so strong that it “is like air – you can forget it exists, and that it is essential to your life.” --Sarah Harrison Smith, Amazon Book Review

Two girls run after their dreams of samba, stardom, friendship, and art, and the result is this glittering, mesmerizing triumph of a novel." –Alexander Chee, author of The Queen of the Night "A glittering, beautiful story full of romance and intrigue and tragedy… hard to put down." –Anton DiSclafani, New York Times-bestselling author of The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls    "I was captivated by this narrator's voice—wise with years of secrets, disappointments, and burning proximity to so much heat and light. And what a story she has to tell: an aching reminiscence of lives entwined by music, friendship, and longing. Vivid and unforgettable."  –Laura Moriarty, New York Times-bestselling author of The Chaperone   "Prepare to lose yourself in this sweeping, lush novel about two girls in 1920s Brazil brought together by circumstance and kept together by love—of song, of success, and, in the end, of each other. As rich and complex and moving as music itself." –Cristina Henríquez, author of  The Book of Unknown Americans   "Sweeps you up like a fairytale, and although the characters are deep and real, the story keeps its breathless magic to the end, with transformations and journeys and bonds as entrancing as Graça and Dores themselves. An ambitious and consuming novel." –Rebecca Makkai, author of The Great Believers   "A luxuriant, lovely, utterly delicious book.  It will transport you to a world that is half-magical, half-historical, deeply familiar, and wholly new.  I couldn't put it down." –Abby Geni, author of The Lightkeepers

The Air You Breathe is a magnificent work of cultural historical fiction and is definitely one of my favorite books of the year. This novel contains all of the aspects I seek in literary fiction: a well-paced plot, beautiful yet clear and engaging writing, and richly drawn characters.Music is a theme that is incorporated into the plot, but The Air You Breathe is really driven by the fascinating journeys of Dores and Graca. I also loved learning about historical Brazil and classic Hollywood while simultaneously being entertained by the story. This novel is completely engrossing and unforgettable. Highly recommended!

Confined my reading to bedtime, but found it difficult to stop and go to bed. Great book, gripping story. I had to exert great will to put it down and go to sleep. Recommend it highly. Could have used some footnotes to explain the slang used as part of the culture, but still worth it. I was completely immersed in the story. How I love a good book!!! I am always so sorry when it ends.😢

This book is a riveting, searing keening about the myriad and intricate ways we demand and need love, like air. The story is unabashed and raw in its emotional honesty. The writing is pure and translucent. The eyes of Dores, the narrator, are unrelentingly piercing. Those who love stories that captivate will not be disappointed. Those who long further—for a narrator who speaks into the complexities of truth, loyalty, foolishness, and hate will find deep reward. This book will make you ache, and will not give you answers. But it will stay with you, and always tell you the truth. A must read.

One of the most original books I’ve read, the book is like a lyric that moves you through so many emotions. It’s beautiful and tragic. One of the best books in my extensive reading list!!

this author has created a beautiful story about the music and the characters whose lives are defined by it. at times their lives mimic the music and at other times, the music is created by the very facts of their circumstances. The author has created characters of complexity, beautiful in their vunerability and totally identifiable by their flaws. i look forward to more from this author

I read this book and then purchased it for my 90 year old aunt. We both enjoyed it so much and saw different things in it due to our different perspectives.

It starts at the beginning and the end.... the story brings you on a journey of life long friends and musicians with Brazil’s history as a backdrop. Loved it!

I liked they way the codependecies & the bisexuality were portrayed

Such a perfect read. Veronica Henry’s novel HOW TO FIND LOVE IN A BOOKSHOP combines a gentleman’s love of books, his charming bookshop, a dedicated father, and thoughts of abounding romance. Oh, it is dreamy. Yet there is grief, mostly seen through the eyes of the bookseller, Julius', daughter Emilia. I was taken with this book from page one.Set in a small town outside of London, where pubs are plentiful and manors too, where everyone seems to know each other, where life is not too fast-paced, where corruption and greed seem not to have taken over entirely, at least not by everyone, yet, and where the power of a good book has never been more evident for evoking strong feelings and even solving life’s problems.Everyone should be so fortunate to have a Julius in their sphere and a place as lovely to go as Nightingale Books in their community. While grief can leave a gaping hole, it often can leave a new kind of love in your heart that you never could have imagined nor could you know was waiting.

How To FInd Love in a Bookshop was a recommendation from my dear friend, M.J.Rose, and I knew after she gave me the synopsis and her thoughts on the book this was something I just had to read. Well, she was not wrong. I enjoyed every page of this sweet, emotional, and charming tale! This book is different from many I read in the sense that it follows a few different people as opposed to one main character or couple and I loved that change of pace! Nightingale books, and it's owner, have been fixtures in this charming town for what seems like forever. It's when the beloved owner passes away that we step into this town and follow the journey of the owner's daughter, his friends and customers, and the love he's left behind. Each character gives a beautiful layer to this emotional and heartfelt story and each character is delightfully multi-faceted with a charm all their own. I felt as if I were a part of this town and this journey and at one point I got a little sad that I didn't have a bookshop of my own like this, to visit and chat with fellow book lovers on an afternoon. But just as soon as the sadness came, it disappeared when I realized that, while I may not have a physical place to visit, I have built a whole on-line world with friends who adore all things bookish as much as I do! Friends who I know will love this story as much as I did.Thank you, M.J., for recommending it and thank you, Ms. Henry, for writing such a wonderful story!

Welcome to Nightingale Books, the bookshop gateway to somewhere else!Widower and single dad Julius Nightingale opens Nightingale Books, a bookshop in the quaint English town of Peasebrook in February 1983. The bookshop became a mecca for the townspeople of Peasebrook, it provided a place of comfort, escape, entertainment, education, and community spirit. Under Julius' guidance, the bookshop even changed minds and lives: "there's a book for everyone, even if they don't think there is. A book that reaches in and grabs your soul." Thirty-two years later in the Fall of 2015, Julius passes away after a brief illness, and daughter Emilia comes home and is determined to honor her father's deathbed wish to take over the bookshop, and make sure that it never closes its door. Like her father always told her, "books are more precious than jewels. A diamond can scintillate for a second, but a book can scintillate forever." While going through the bookshop, Emilia finds that Nightingale Books is in financial trouble and in desperate need of a renovation. But with the love and support of the bookshop's faithful customers and Julius' friends, can Emilia find a way to keep her promise to her father? How To Find Love In A Bookshop is a delightful story that follows Emilia's decision to takeover her deceased father's bookshop, and how it continues to bring the townspeople of Peasebrook together. Author Veronica Henry does a wonderful job of intertwining Emilia's story along with the individual stories of some of the bookshop's devoted customers. You can't help but get caught up in the characters' lives, and how Nightingale Books was a central meeting place in the community, and how it provided it's special magic of helping them find love, hope, peace, and second chances.I loved the richly detailed setting of the quaint English countryside town of Peasebrook. What I loved even more was the ability to close my eyes and transport myself into the magical Nightingale Books. Any fan of books will yearn to lose themselves in the shelves of books and community spirit that lives within the walls of the bookshop. In the current time of online bookstores, Nightingale Books is a treasure that takes you back to when bookshops were a cherished community place that held a special magic within the pages of the books it sold. How To Find Love In A Bookshop is a wonderful feel-good story that connects the intertwining lives and loves of a cherished bookshop's customers in a quaint English town.

Love to read stories set in small English villages. This one was no exception. The heroine. Emilia, wants nothing more than to make the Nightingale Book Shoppe fiscally sound to honor her father's memory. The reader has to be patient in the beginning to get through the father's back story and then learn about the various village characters who will eventually each come to the store's rescue. But if the reader makes it that far, the rest of the story is a delightful telling of love and support.

I loved the story and I loved the characters. It was one of those books that is fun to read when you need a lift. I looked to see if the author wrote a sequel but was disappointed there is none. I hated to see it end. In fact I could not find any other books by this author that were on kindle.

Like most books in this genre, the ending is too happy. Everything works out for everyone just as a benevolent fairy godmother gazing over the town would have wished. That being said, the story was worthwhile. The various characters were well-drawn, and all were interesting in their own ways. The knitting together of all their subplots and how they relate to the main character was well done. And being a book/bookstore lover, it was interesting to read the problematic details of keeping Nightingale's afloat after the death of Emilia's father, Julius. The impact of books (and Julius) on the novel's characters was also insightful. Not a typical selection for me, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
