Very spiritual inspiring short stories. I love it, because I can read a whole story before I go to bed. With my schedule it may be a week before I get back to a book.

The color scheme Wangerin displays in the vividly moving and pulling book, not only draws lines to your own life but also paints the difficult and more than likely self-abasing canvas of his own wanderings and in no way applauds himself for the slight victory before the fall back into confusion that God so faithfully pulls us all out of eventually. Follow Walter through his young married life and the struggles of parenthood, into a better understanding of our Father who continually pushes us through adversity into perfection. An organic and honest read to say the least, 10/10.

Fifteen years ago I had read the first chapter of this book, then lost it. I hoped someone would find it and be as inspired as I had been. Now I have found it again and been blessed to read the whole book. Though none matches the first chapter, they all have the authors brilliant touch and profound spiritual insight. Please read it. You will be blessed.

I enjoyed the symbolism in the stories and the stories. Some of them read like stories you might find sent around on mass email lists. The stories challenge you by thinking through tough issues and encourages you to live out what you believe. The poems and stories encourage you to serve. I first heard about this through a sermon on Truth for Life and it's well worth your time to dig into this book.

Loved the short stories which captured my imagination. Easy to read but hard to get out of my mind. recommend it.

Walter Wangerin does an outstanding job utilizing fictitious (some) stories to present the Gospel in a real-world way. It as timeless as it was the first time I read the book. From teaching "The Good Samaritan" story at a gas pump to presenting Christ as a modern-day figure exchanging worn items for new ones, Dr. Wangerin shares with us his representation of God's light through Jesus. It is like a puzzle, at first, which slowly unfolds the more you read it. A treasure book, to be sure!

Excellent. Walt Wangerin is an amazing storyteller with meaning and authenticity. There is the "Ragman" poetry story which is wonderful in itself and then there are stories that are worth reading! See also the "Cries of the Congregation". Beautiful!

Very moving and insightful. One man's journey into faith and his growth, you can experience through his journey with his Church and his family. Strongly recommend for the believers and non-believers alike.

Having read a number of Jon Gordon books, I really like how he has taken a number of the key concepts from previous material and linked them to sports coaching and developing athletes. When you add in Mike Smith's perspective of his time as the Head Coach of the Falcons and some of his other coaching experiences, it really helps to see how these principles apply and why they are important to building successful teams and organizations.One of the aspects I really found interesting was how Mike shared not only his successes but he was sincere in sharing where losing sight of certain principles had let him down. I read many books that talk about successes and what to do. It's rare to hear someone being that honest and open about what they should have done differently. As a coach, sometimes those messages are as, if not more, valuable as lessons to focus on than some of the other ideas.Admittedly, this book falls into line with my own coaching philosophy in many ways. While some of the message was common sense, there were some new ways of looking at things that I really resonated with and I'll be making plans to add to our program. There were some ideas that were new and it's always an excellent reminder to focus on the things we can control. There is most definitely a big emphasis on developing the person behind the athlete, the real value of being a coach and the impact we can, and that focusing on the process is the best way to earn long-term success.It's a quick read and full of so many nuggets of wisdom. Highly recommended to anyone who aspires to have an impact as a leader in any field, not just sports.

Great content that could have been accomplished with the same effectiveness in about 60-75% of the amount of pages. By the end, I felt like they were scraping the bottom of the barrel to add content. I also thought it was confusing that the book is called "the 7 C's" and yet after 7, they just kept going with other concepts - which, again, were good concepts but they seemed to drag. I would recommend this book only as a notes version or perhaps even the last few pages that give the "action plan". Other than that, I wouldn't spend the time to read the entire book.

I've actually had this book for a little while and I have been remiss in not submitting a review prior to now. In between travel and dealing with a busy work life and home life, this book has truly been a blessing on advice!Jon Gordon continues to improve and impress me with each new book he releases. The lessons that he and Mike Smith talk about in this book are not just for the "locker room" but for work and in family life. I particularly love the fact that they show that they are human and experience setbacks and struggles and how they approach dealing with the impact, then moving forward with your best foot forward.I love the style of writing as if it were a conversation rather than an instruction book. Both men seem genuinely humble and caring in their tellings and advice offered. I highly recommend this to anyone, not just as a "work improvement" book, but as good advice given to us by great people!Keep up the fantastic work and I look forward to more works from each of you! :)

A fantastic book for coaches and leaders. The book was concise with great stories/examples from co-author (and ex-NFL head coach) Mike Smith. There were tons of relevant, actionable suggestions for anyone who coaches, leads and/or manages people.

Great book! I am not into athletics and it was recommended I read this book for business purposes and it was fantastic! It kept my attention the whole time and I loved that it was told through stories and real life examples. The reason I gave this book three stars it because it took AGES to get to my house! I was supposed to be reading it with a group of people but they were done and moved on by time it came in the mail. It took a MONTH to get to me!

I give this book a strong 3. A more simpler and practical approach to leadership but there was nothing earth shattering in this book so that’s why I gave it a 3. Communicate and communicating with everyone was the main overall concept, IMO, of the book. Also, your vision needs to be clear and everyone must understand it.The thing that surprised me the most is that Mike Smith revealed what he thought went wrong in Atlanta. This was huge to me because I never hear the author or co author critique themselves much I these type of books. You will be surprised at his answer.Book is worth a read and will give a rookie leader a blueprint to create the culture he or she wants.

He tells you what he did wrong as well as what he learned from it. Then he suggests a better way.The book is short enough to keep your attention and the anecdotes are good.Additionally, he references the right people to support his ideas, e.g. John Wooden.Then practice what you read.

I absolutely loved this book! It is full of insight for anyone who is looking to build a program that is deeper and more than just Wins and Loses. It is a very quick read and I could not put it down! Really looking forward to implementing some of the ideas with my Football team this fall. The only downside is that I read this in January and now I am all fired up and ready for Football Season! If you are a coach you need to be reading Jon Gordon, really great stuff!

He would gift this book instead of calling for delivery.The pictures are generous and beautiful, but my one feedback is that each recipe should be accompanied by a picture. PCJT will be a timeless addition to your library.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book from the publisher for a review. I was not required to write a positive review and I only review and rate products that I personally have reviewed.

Every cookbook organizes recipes based on different criteria. This cookbook is unique because it uses “cooking style” as the organizing criteria.I can see how this layout would benefit an experienced cook trying to improve his/her skills using very specific cooking method, such as Flash-Frying or Dry-Frying. To me, it’s not optimal because I would rather sort through recipes by geographic region or type of food.Nonetheless, this book deserves a 5-stars because of the excellent content.Please note: This is NOT American-Chinese cuisine. I found some recipes such as Kung Pao Chicken, General Tso, and Stir-Fry Beef, which should be palatable for most people. However, this is an authentic Chinese cookbook, including recipes for Rabbit, Squab, Carp, Eel, Beef Tripe, Pig Stomach, Pork Liver and Kidney, Pig Feet, Squid, etc. Most of these recipes I would never make for myself, but it’s a nice resource to have.If you purchase this cookbook looking for American-Chinese cuisine, you may be disappointed.

This is probably the most comprehensive introduction to Chinese cooking. The author puts special emphasis on ingredients, equipment, and technique. He wants you to understand the "how" and "why" behind everything, which makes him a wonderful teacher. The photography is also to die for, and it's obvious from the recipes and photos that the author is a real master of Chinese cooking.The types of recipes in this cookbook are for the types of dishes that you might find in a fine Chinese restaurant. Many of them are something quite special and better than the typical versions that one might eat at any small restaurant in China. Instead, these are the sort of dishes that would be available at an expensive restaurant or hotel. However, I should emphasize that the dishes are not so difficult. It just means that you may have to stock your cupboards with some extra spices and sauces (no big deal).For those who are looking for the very simple dishes that one might find in anyone's home in China, I would recommend "The Cultural Revolution Cookbook." That book does not have dishes that are so elegant and special, but they are more authentic to the type of simple home cooking found in kitchens all across China. Many of those recipes have only like 3-4 ingredients, and no special preparation, just as we would see from farmers out in the countryside. There is something beautiful about that type of simplicity too.For those who want to try making some really great and special Chinese dishes, including learning all sorts of neat techniques, I recommend this book. For those who just want to learn simple dishes for home cooking, I recommend "The Cultural Revolution Cookbook." Each book has its domain and does its thing perfectly.Finally, Kian Lam Kho's enthusiasm and passion for cooking really shine through in this book. The author genuinely cares about teaching you in the very best possible way, and teaching you everything you would need to know about the techniques and reasons behind everything. It's really an unbeatable comprehensive introduction to Chinese cooking.

Some people may be off-put by the fact that there is a LOT of exposition as to the history of Chinese cuisine, regional differences, etc. but I love that stuff. The recipes are also rocking: I have a dedicated Fire in the kitchen that I use to pull up recipes, and this book is a go-to.

I didn't buy this book as a cookbook, but more of an encyclopaedia and general guide. That's exactly what I got. I will certainly try some of the recipes, but more importantly, the author gives tips on techniques, tools and ingredients, which make Chinese cuisine much more approachable. Also of note, the recipes and styles are broken down into regions, which further demystifies to huge geographic mass which is "Chinese cuisine", and also offers insights into how and when the various styles made their way to America. A great reference work. Which is exactly what I wanted.

This book is amazing. There's so much detail about the equipment, the cutting techniques, and the various forms of cooking across the great spectrum of Chinese cuisine. The recipes I've used have been great. I appreciate that variety meats are included, even if I'm not yet brave enough to cook them at home! The author really provides enough information to make you comfortable with cooking techniques very different from what most Americans are used to. Definitely a keeper and one I'll recommend to friends.

Four Essays on Liberty is a book encouraged Krauthammer to learn from as many sources and experiences as possible as a young man. People who learn from many different sources are called foxes. People who learn from a primary source are called hedgehogs. I will strive to be a fox. Krauthammer advocated remaining calm at all times. He believed in self reflection, but he also believed that looking outwardly in the world to be successful. He shared this advice with college students in Montreal. This is great advice for people of any age. I really like this book.

Whether you agree with everything Charles Krauthammer believed in is of little relevance. You life and mind will thank you for the essays that will enrich your soul. Charles was a man of true and genuine thoughts, never allowed others to bulldoze him, but rather allowed others to enlighten him by truly listening and caring about what they had to say. He would then make up his own mind without bias and without an agenda. Charles' son, Daniel, who clearly respected and revered his father, did him a true solid by contributing to the book as he did - an obvious final goodbye and a true gift of love.

Just finished a wonderful book, unfortunately the last book written by Charles Krauthammer called” The Point of it All”.I have long admired his insightful writing, but this collection of his best articles and speeches is outstanding! His wit and wisdom is impressive and his writing style is easy to read, but best read with time allowed for reflection.His intellect is on full display when arguing for conservative principles based on the Constitution. I pity the unsuspecting liberal who attempted to debate against him. I fully support his criticism of liberal thinking and specifically Obama, but I also appreciate his honest and critical comments when Republicans stray from conservative principles.The diversity of topics he covers in the book was a sign of his personal curiosity, ranging from sports (especially baseball) to religion to domestic and foreign policy. I enjoyed his sense of history and his ability to relate current events in historical context.I enjoyed his frequent criticism of his former career as a physician and specifically a psychologist. I generally find physicians need to be a bit more modest and better grounded to the limits of their “practice”.Loved his use of quotes from Churchill and his distain for the French.I got rather emotional to read the last section, A life without regrets. To face death with grace and a full appreciation of what is really important in his life was his wife and family. I can only hope to handle my own passing with similar grace.

This wonderful book gives one insight into a man that had the ability to communicate with everyone. What he overcame in his life and what he did with his life should give everyone a more positive outlook on where they are in life and what they can do to make the world a better place.

Mr.Krauthammer was a very inspirational man,I would watch him on Fox news whenever he was on as a political commentator.I stayed up late reading all his writings on baseball and politics ,he said it like it was ,didn't beat around the bush,I admire him for that.I will definitely recommend this book to family and friends.

This is a gift for a fan of Charles'. I'm sure he'll enjoy ready it, and me when he's done. Charles was a wonderful man. Question: Are the pages supposed to be pointy scalloped, or were they supposed to be flush/flat like other books are?

I bought these books to give as gifts for Christmas, but the quality of this book is so poor that I hate to give as a gift. The paper is cheap, but mainly it is the edges of the pages which is not cut evenly at all. Very poorly put together.

Would not purchase again because pricing and times to be delivered were very confusing.

The worst investment I made some far. This book in no way helped me to further understand the material covered in my retail buying, and overall was a great disappointment. I wouldn't recommend spending the money. It's just not worth it, and the publisher customer service was horrible.

In this fascinating and eye-opening compendium, Frans de Waal says we are prejudiced towards ourselves, always comparing animals’ performance to ours, in unfairly biased experiments designed for us. It bothers people that we are not unique, and it bothers de Waal that animals don’t get the credit they deserve. Ranging all over the world and all over species, the book is an endless marvel.de Waal gives the example of a chimp named Ayumu at a research center in Japan, who can routinely memorize nine numbers in any given order, having seen them for just one fifth of one second. He can then pick them out in order from random numbers presented to him all over the computer screen. No human comes close. That’s a problem for a lot of scientists. The book is full of examples of animals, birds and fish doing highly intelligent things naturally. Our tests twist and pervert their skills to fit the test, showing them less intelligent than they are. We draw the wrong conclusions, often by asking the wrong questions. de Waal shows the way to a far more appreciative and objective way of looking at the world.My own favorite story in prejudice occurred when scientists induced pain in the feet of mice to see if they could be made to hide it. They found that mice could put on a brave face, but only when a human male tended to them. For females, they let their guard down; they freely showed their suffering. The difference was so strong that it worked even when scientists simply placed a man’s t-shirt near the cage. The mice were totally focused on fear and ignored their own pain. This said two things: mice could hide their own pain, and every experiment using mice is to some extent invalid, prejudiced by the mere presence of humans. Male or female scientists will cause different results.To that story, de Waal adds attention, motivation, and especially cognition, giving animals the full range of unlimited possibility, including communication (bottlenose dolphins call to each other by name). It is actually true respect. One of the most important topics covered is the notion of continuity. “It is far more logical to assume continuity in every domain, Griffin said, echoing Charles Darwin’s well-known observation that the mental difference between humans and other animals is one of degree rather than kind.”11. Explains key differences between behaviorism and ethology. “The difference between behaviorism and ethology has always been one of human-controlled versus natural behavior. Behaviorists sought to dictate behavior by placing animals in barren environments in which they could do little else than what the experimenter wanted.”12. The book provides interesting examples that includes animals beyond de Waal’s expertise of primates. “With animals such as chimpanzees, elephants, and crows, for which we have ample evidence of complex cognition, we really do not need to start at zero every time we are struck by seemingly smart behavior.”13. Provocative questions. Do animals have culture? Find out.14. Provides evidence for animal cognition. “A century ago Wolfgang Köhler set the stage for animal cognition research by demonstrating that apes can solve problems in their heads by means of a flash of insight, before enacting the solution.” “Apes do not just search for tools for specific occasions; they actually fabricate them.”15. The pioneers of animal cognition. “Nadia Ladygina-Kohts was a pioneer in animal cognition, who studied not only primates but also parrots, such as this macaw. Working in Moscow at around the same time that Köhler conducted his research, she remains far less known.”16. The amazing story of Ayumu. “Ayumu’s photographic memory allows him to quickly tap a series of numbers on a touchscreen in the right order, even though the numbers disappear in the blink of an eye. That humans cannot keep up with this young ape has upset some psychologists.”17. An interesting look at social skills. “The cooperative pulling paradigm, as it is known, has been applied to monkeys, hyenas, parrots, rooks, elephants, and so on.” “In the end, we found proof in the pudding that chimpanzees are highly cooperative. They have no trouble whatsoever regulating and dampening strife for the sake of achieving shared outcomes.”18. Do animals plan ahead? “This study was quite ingenious and included a few additional controls, leading the authors to conclude that jays recall what items they have put where and at what point in time.” “Lisala, a bonobo, carries a heavy rock on a long trek toward a place where she knows there are nuts. After collecting the nuts, she continues her trek to the only large slab of rock in the area, where she employs her rock as a hammer to crack the nuts. Picking up a tool so long in advance suggests planning.”19. The intelligence of elephants. “In short, elephants make sophisticated distinctions regarding potential enemies to the point that they classify our own species based on language, age, and gender. How they do so is not entirely clear, but studies like these are beginning to scratch the surface of one of the most enigmatic minds on the planet.”20. A chart depicting the different types of primates with key statistics as an example. Maps showing where the main subjects come from.3. On the topic of neuroscience a little more depth was warranted. Once again, visual material would have complemented the narrative.4. The format could have been enhanced to highlight the most noteworthy observations or facts.In summary, this was a very entertaining book. Professor De Waal succeeds in entertaining and educating the public on animal cognition. His mastery of the topic is admirable and is careful to be grounded on the facts and not to oversell an idea. A lot of interesting insights don’t miss this one. I truly hated one thing about this book - it ended! Now I have to read everything else Frans de Wall has written and I'll never get the laundry done. A powerful and important book. So many fascinating stories, examples, experiments and all of it written in clear, concise language that even I could follow. Elephants, ravens, dolphins, wasps, chimps, oh my! I vividly remember my 8th grade science teacher telling the class that what separated us from animals was our ability to make and use tools. Oops.I especially was drawn to the idea that learning depends more on social connections than incentives. Throw away those stickers! Rapport trumps rewards every time. If I were in charge of the world, I'd make this required reading for every teacher.We have a very narrow "umwelt" indeed.
