This story has a lot to offer! It isn't very long, but there's a lot to digest. Kafka uses symbolism so well and the plot provides an unsettling insight into society and humanity. There is a sense of despair throughout the story which really does a lot to sell the mood and circumstances of the protagonist. I highly recommend this!I've had to write extensively about this story and the accompanying essays and it has helped me shape my understanding and opinion. The essays included after the story are thought provoking although I disagree with some interpretations of the story.

The book leaves you wondering though it all. I have heard that it was a unsettling and interesting book, but on the contrary I found it moving and a little disharding . I felt for him , he worked for his family and they basically abandoned him . It is definitely a good book to read .

The work is still wonderful, but the critical edition includes topics and thought-provoking essays. I bought this when my granddaughter was reading it in high school and wanted to discuss it with me.

Well done. I also like all the critical information added.

About the Author

Stephen Isaacs, JD, and Paul Jellinek, PhD, are the founding partners of Isaacs/Jellinek, a consulting firm that helps foundations and foundation-funded organizations reach their full potential. Together, they have more than fifty years' experience in the field of philanthropy: as grant makers, grant seekers, and advisors to foundations. Mr. Isaacs is an attorney, a writer-editor, and a retired Columbia University professor. He served as a program officer in the U.S. Agency for International Development, a vice president of International Planned Parenthood, and as president of the Center for Health and Social Policy. A graduate of Brown University and Columbia Law School, Mr. Isaacs also serves as a director of The Royce Funds. Dr. Jellinek spent nearly twenty years at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the last twenty as a program vice president. He managed a portfolio of $370 million in fields ranging from children's health to substance abuse prevention. Dr. Jellinek received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and his doctorate in health policy and administration from the University of North Carolina.

This book is simple to read and understand. It is well organized in the information provided. Very helpful overview of foundations.

The book may have some simple ideas if you are starting a multi-billion dollar foundation. Other than that it was basically useless information.

The book covers the basics on starting a foundation. But then the authors explained much more is needed to start a foundation, which the book does not cover.

This book is an excellent primer that should be read by staff and trustees of Foundations and by people thinking about setting up a charitable foundation. In a short number of pages, the authors lay out the basics of philanthropy in a readable and surprisingly thorough way. It reviews both technical issues (e.g., the rules about establishing a foundation and types of foundations) and substantive issues (e.g., how a foundation should think about having "impacts" on the issues it focuses on). I worked in philanthropy for many years and wish this book was available when I was hiring new staff or welcoming new trustees.

As a new Board member of a relatively young nonprofit, the National Physicians Alliance, which may be considering creating a foundation, this is an invaluable publication. In my view, a must for anyone contemplating the foundation/nonprofit challenges.

I'm not sure how a person writes a whole book, covering a bunch of very interesting shipwrecks, and ends up with such an un-interesting book… what's not interesting about a shipwreck… All I can figure is that it was the writing style, maybe, but I had a tough time finishing it without really skipping around. I have to believe that given the subject matter, it could have been a much much better read.

GREAT BOOK,

Whenever I am not actually diving, I spend my entire day immersed in research, research and even more research. I spend a great deal of money on books and have a fine library. Many of those books are quite excellent, other less so and occasionally I get some which are quite poor. I cannot remember, however, the last time I got a book about shipwrecks where I actually learned nothing at all. Unfortunately, that is exactly what I got from this very poor offering from Mr Fine - absolutely nothing. Furthermore, the quality of both paper and photographs are quite abysmal.According to the nine-line "bio" of this author at the end of the book, John Christopher Fine has all the, qualifications, attributes, experience, ability and even reputation to produce an excellent book about shipwrecks. Seems to me, Mr Fine has decided to rest on his laurels and publish in the expectation of his reputation selling his books.Perhaps he can tell me where I might get a refund?NM

Although the sub-title of this book implies that it is about diving, I find that this book is more about the ships themselves, and how they sank than about diving on them. And there seem to be so many books like this one on sunken ships that you have to kind of have to be surprised to see that there are any ships still afloat.This book pretty much covers the world. It has sunken Roman ships in the Med. Spanish treasure ships bring back gold and silver from the Ne World. Ships from various wars seem to litter the ground in places like Scapa Flow. There is much more coverage of the Atlantic areas than of the Pacific.Mr. Fine clearly loves the ocean and its collenction of sunken ships. It is clear that he has carefully researched the ships he is writing about. I found the book hard to put down.

I was really disatified with this book. I just can`t really find much good to say about it. The pictures,the few that was in book were more about cannonballs and jewelry that were found on some ships.The author wrote alot about how some ships were built but didn't tell how some of the ship even looked under water or the damage they had taken to sink.In my opinion the sunken ships in the pacific ocean were not covered enough. If you are interested in sunken ships I would avoid this book at all costs.

… and aren’t so many?Samuel Taylor Coleridge lived from 1772 to 1834. He was often in ill-health, both physical and mentally. And he was a drug addict. Out of his anguish came this beautiful poem, which I first read, as so many of us did, in a high school English anthology. And I think I passed the test! Regrettably, it has taken more than half a century for a re-read, and there should have been at least a couple other re-reads along the way. Praise be to Kindle. It now makes the selection of particular “classical” works so easy, and often they are free, as this one was, and at your finger-tips within a minute or two.As the title states, it is a poem that concerns an old sailor, his days at sea, and a very notable mistake. It is a poem told, inexplicably, or not, at a wedding feast, since it is a “life-lesson.” It is a sea trip from cold to warm. It is about being motionless at sea, because “For all averred, I killed the bird That made the breeze blow.” That bird was a harmless Albatross. And the following part of the poem has entered the English language as an apt metaphor for ill-considered actions that come back to haunt the doer: “Instead of the cross, the Albatross about my neck was hung.The poem is also about remorse, and forgiveness, phrased as: “The man hath penance done, and penance more will do.” They do make it to that elusive safe-harbor. And Coleridge closes, with this most healthy and sane advice, about our place in the universe, and how we should treat others, of our species and not, both ‘great and small’: “He prayeth well, who loveth well, Both man and bird and beast. He prayeth best, who loveth best, All things both great and small; For the dear God who loveth us, He made and loveth all.”It is a tight, fast-paced poem with memorable imagery, suitable to be read in high school still, or many years beyond. 5-stars.

The epigram which Samuel Taylor Coleridge used to introduce "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" helps to convey two varying, but similarly related, ideas to the reader. First, it addresses the enigmas of Nature and the stamina of ancient folklore and superstition surrounding it which tempts the reader into trivializing the overall beauty of the poem itself. Second, it emphasizes the idea that the reader can never expect his or her questions to be universally answered. Therefore, the presence of the epigram provides the reader with a guideline to Coleridge's poetic intent of accepting the poem as an exquisite work of art rather than as a work of hidden messages within and between the stanzas.

A quick (non-racy) excerpt to peak your interest:---------------------------------------Hush, beating heart of Christabel!Jesu, Maria, shield her well!She folded her arms beneath her cloak,And stole to the other side of the oak.What sees she there?---------------------------------------But of course The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the star of this show. It is loaded with familiar lines, lines that take on real meaning in context of the overall poem. Best I can do is an excerpt:---------------------------------------I closed my lids, and kept them close,And the balls like pulses beat;For the sky and the sea, and the sea and the skyLay like a load on my weary eye,And the dead were at my feet.The cold sweat melted from their limbs,Nor rot nor reek did they:The look with which they looked at meHad never passed away.An orphan's curse would drag to hellA spirit from on high;But oh! more horrible than thatis the curse in a dead man's eye!---------------------------------------(And you thought that was from some pirate movie!) That is far from the most famous line in the poem, and if the poem is new to you, you may be surprised by familiar lines as you come across them. There are other poems in this volume with lines as memorable, if not as famous.There is quite a lot in this little volume and for $2 it is a steal, especially if you qualify for free shipping!
