Simson Garfinkel and Heather Lipford’s Usable Security: History, Themes, and Challenges should be on the shelf of anyone who is developing software that asks people to make decisions about computer security.We have to ask people to make decisions because they have information that the computer doesn’t. My favorite example is the Windows “new network” dialog, which asks what sort of network you’re connecting to..work, home or coffee shop. The information is used to configure the firewall. My least favorite example is phishing, where people are asked to make decisions about technical minutiae before authenticating. Regardless, we are not going to entirely remove the need for people to make decisions about computer security. So we can either learn to gain their participation in more effective ways, or we can accept a very high failure rate. The former option is better, and this book is a substantial contribution.It’s common for designers to throw up their hands at these challenges, saying things like “given a choice between security and dancing babies, people will choose dancing babies every time,” or “you can’t patch human stupidity.” However, in a recently published study by Google and UCSD, they found that the best sites only fooled 45% of the people who clicked through, while overall only 13% did. (There’s a good summary of that study available.) Claiming that “people will choose dancing babies 13% of the time” just doesn’t seem like a compelling argument against trying.This slim book is a review of the academic work that’s been published, almost entirely in the last 20 years, on how people interact with information security systems. It summarizes and contextualizes the many things we’ve learned, mistakes that have been made, and does so in a readable and concise way. The book has six chapters: Intro A brief history Major Themes in UPS Academic Research Lessons Learned Research Challenges Conclusion/The Next Ten YearsThe “Major themes” chapter is 61 or so pages, which is over half of the 108 pages of content. (The book also has 40 pages of bibliography). Major themes include authentication, email security and PKI, anti-phishing, storage, device pairing, web privacy, policy specification, mobile, social media and security administration.The “Lessons Learned” chapter is quite solid, covering “reduce decisions,” “safe and secure defaults,” “provide users with better information, not more information,” “users require clear context to make good decisions,” “information presentation is critical” and “education works but has limits.” I have a quibble, which is Sasse’s concept of mental ‘compliance budgets’ is also important, and I wish it were given greater prominence. (My other quibble is more of a pet peeve: the term “user” where “people” would serve. Isn’t it nicer to say “people require clear context to make good decisions”?) Neither quibble should take away from my key message, which is that this is an important new book.The slim nature of the book is, I believe, an excellent usability property. The authors present what’s been done, lessons that they feel can be taken away, and move to the next topic. This lets you the reader design, build or deploy systems which help the person behind the keyboard make the decisions they want to make. Very good book for it's intended audience. I wished I had such a book or been provided the information in the book before I started junior high school rather than having to learn through experience or trial and error.

Well written book that can give kids good ideas on how to take tests better. Easy read and good easy tips that can you can do right away.

Purchased this for my daughter and we read it together. It's easy for teen agers to understand and has very helpful tips for studying and time management.

This is a superb, very short book packed with practical ideas.I have used it as a class advisor to 9th graders, and for some of them it has really been a lifeboat off of the Titanic. Some were great students in middle school, but are having trouble adjusting to the expectations of high school. Others have a great work ethic, but they don't know how to budget their time or know when they really, truly know something cold. Still others believe that "studying" means planning to sit for 10 continuous hours on the night before a big test.Learning how to learn -- at any age -- is a challenge. There is no "one size fits all" strategy. But it can be especially awful for students who want to do well and feel they can't, no matter how hard they try. And it can be especially awful to be a caring adult in the life of such a student: sometimes you feel almost as helpless as they do.Sound familiar? Get this book. Grossberg writes like that "dream tutor" everyone is looking for: she's fun, direct...and right. The advice is good, and she presents it in a way that isn't preachy or abstract. It's like getting advice from your hip neighbor who just happens to be a learning specialist. As you read it, you may feel as if she wrote it for your particular child. There are a lot of "how did you know THAT?!" moments.Great for all students, middle and high school, for educators and parents.

I work with several students who have found Dr. Grossberg's handy, upbeat guide very helpful. I highly recommend it for high school and even college students.

LOVE this book. I was fortunate to have Sheila as my mental health instructor while in nursing school. This is the ONLY textbook that I can honestly say that I read cover to cover while in nursing school. It is the only textbook I have ever truly enjoyed reading. VERY well written. It is packed full of great info and written in a way that keeps your interest. Sheila, the author, has several years of experience in psych nursing & has several years of experience in teaching. Everything you need to know about mental health is in this book.

She teaches in clear understandable language regarding the discerning of the spirits, or seeing in the supernatural. She delves deep into one of the nine spiritual gifts described by Paul in 1 Corinthians 12. She is very practical. The chapters include1-Seeing both sides of the supernatural2-The gift of Discerning of Spirits3-Fundamentals of discerning of Spirits4-Discerning Spiritual Atmospheres5-Discerning who is for you and who is against you6-Dicerning the Angels7-Discerning the Powers and Principalities8-Whta to do with the things you discern Particularly helpful are chapters 4,5, and 8. The discerning of spiritual atmospheres is very interesting and she goes deep there. She not only uses the scriptures to back up her teachings, but also uses her experiences and real life stories to each through example. Chapter 5 is very useful. Discerning who is for you and who is against you. This is very helpful as we go into the workplace, into our places where we interact and socialize with others, Jennifer teaches us how to discern who is for us and who is against us ! Chapter 8 is also very useful, as we have learned how to discern in the precious chapters, she gives us very practical recommendations, what then are we supposed to do with those information ! I can't recommend this book more highly!

Wow! Really opened my eyes to things I'd wondered about before, but she put words to it and backed it up with scripture. A very helpful resource for those seeking to grow in the gift of discernment. Just by reading these few helpful hints, I am way more spiritually aware of things I was unsure of before! It has helped me to know better how to pray in different situations and dialogue with God about it. Has truly made a difference in my life.

Amazing book- I found it by "mistake" but now i know that God guided me towards it. We went on family trip to Mammoth Mountain this weekend and I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. God will reveal amazing things to you through this book - if you allow it!! Highly recommend it!!

Our study group is using this book to learn about the gift of discerning of spirits. If you do not believe in the gifts of the Spirit according to 1 Corinthians 12 you may be turned off by it. As a Pentecostal minister I find it incredibly well written and understandable. The first two chapters expose the enemy and the darkness he resides in but the rest of the book glorifies the work of the Spirit of God! Do not be fearful in reading it, pray for discernment!! If you feel gifted in this area but are unsure how to be used in it, this is a good book that gives instruction. God bless you!!

This is the second book I've read about this subject. The Veil by Blake K. Healy was the first book that I read. After reading his book and learning of his amazing supernatural gifts and encounters with the spiritual realm, I realized that my life and all the supernatural things I've encountered and experienced first hand was also happening to others around that world.I'm not crazy! I just need to find others in my area! A church in my area would be amazing but I don't believe there is one. If I walked into any Christian church's where I live and told them the supernatural things that i feel all around us with my GOD given senses they'd probably have me locked up. I never understood the church. They believe Jesus healed the sick, made blind men see, and walked on water ( to name a few) but anybody else having these abilities is not possible and must be pagan or witchcraft and if the devil.Well that's not so. I LOVE GOD/JESUS SO SO MUCH.Just the thought of his love for me beings tears to my eyes.
