About the Author

Ted Hart has been an avid antenna experimenter for many years. His first antenna was a wire attached to a crystal set receiver circa 1940. He became a licensed amateur radio operator in 1948 (W5QJR) and is still active and has continued his antenna experiments. This book describes the Poynting Vector Antenna (PVA), which is the ultimate communications antenna, except for directional beams, and then two or more Poynting Vector Antennas in a non interactive phased array can provide that directivity. Circa 1988, Professor Hately and his colleagues published a paper in Electronics magazine describing the Crossed Field Antenna. Hart then began to exchange information with Professor Hately but in applying this information he was unsuccessful in causing a large model of the crossed field antenna to achieve the desired level of radiation. He then decided there must be a better way. The PVA is not conventional and, in fact, it is most gratifying to know that patent (US 6486846) was granted on the concept rather than a specific implementation. Patents 6864849 and 6956535 were issued later. Hart obtained a BSEE degree in 1957 at the University of Oklahoma. He worked for the Collins Radio Company for ten years, then for Omega-T-Systems and Scientific Communications. In these corporations, he worked as a Circuit Design and System Engineer, primarily related to airborne radar, radar remote systems for the FAA, and ground based portions of satellite systems. At Harris he became the Director of Engineering for a project valued at more than $130 Million. This was the ground terminal for the NASA TDRSS project. After retirement the majority of his time has been devoted to further development of the PVA. Now that the book is compete and both Hart and Birke are convinced that this is the ultimate antenna, no more experiments, analysis or development is deemed fruitful.Paul Birke attended the University of Toronto graduating with a BASc in Electrical Engineering in 1967. Paul obtained his Canadian Amateur Radio license (VE3PVB) after retirement He notes that his original degree from Toronto was with an electronics option; however, during the four years at the University of Toronto, he always maintained a strong interest in fields and the mathematics supporting their description and use. He joined Westinghouse Canada and developed the Teledeltos Magnetic Field Mapper.  His MEng thesis at McMaster University entitled Analogue Technique for Mapping Poissonian Fields formed the basis of his 1970 paper entitled “A Capacitively Coupled Magnetic Flux Mapper. During this time at Westinghouse, Paul also worked on Schwarz-Christoffel methods for Conformal Mapping for applications to electric and magnetic field analysis. At Westinghouse, Paul received the Gold Engineering Award in 1985 for developing the methodology, both engineering and manufacturing, that resulted in the EHV Shunt Reactor used for load stability on AC transmission lines.  Herein, electric and magnetic fields analysis proved critical to the successful development of this new product for Westinghouse Canada.  Also developed at this time was a nonlinear programming method for which Paul was given a special engineering award at Westinghouse.  During this time he was the R&D Manager for Large Power Transformers, Westinghouse Canada Ltd, Hamilton, Ontario. Paul has co-authored a paper in the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics entitled “Distributed Magnetic Coupling Synchronizes a 25-Kv Stacked MOSFET Switch”, Jan.  2000, Vol.15, N0.1, pp. 50-61.   The key to this circuit function is its novel magnetic coupling technique.  Design of the electric field between the “sardine shaped” stack elements was analyzed with special ABB finite element software for optimal inter-stack gap and electrode shape of the switch consistent with zero probability of air flashover.  The device was optimized in the presence of strong EM fields in its high-voltage stack composed of simultaneous magnetically-driven gating of its low-voltage IGBT switches.  Paul joined Ted about four (4) years prior to completing this book. His background in Field Theory with Ted’s experimental results have culminated in the development of the Poynting Vector Antenna.

Most of the math in the book is way beyond me. The book needed more down-to-earth, how-to-build chapters. Still, I appreciate all the work and research that went into the book.

In the last few years I have been working on the theoretical aspects ofelectromagnetism by suggesting a possible escape from someinconsitencies present in the classical Maxwell's model. This nice book testifies that this revision may actually play animportant role in real life applications.Daniele Funaro

This is a dense, detailed, intense examination of the Reformation. I had to read it several semesters ago for a class and it still sticks in my mind as a prime example of why historians should not write history books. They know so much about the topic at hand that they suffer from being unable to distill it all for a general audience, and get bogged down in asides and pieces of stories only to pick up those threads so much farther down the road that the reader has long forgotten where that particular thread first got pulled. There IS some fascinating stuff in here, but this is not for the weak-hearted or casual, uncommitted reader. Pull up a chair, cancel all other social obligations, and expect to stay for at least several weeks. As a reference text, it is invaluable - there is gold in "them thare pages," and plenty of detail to understand how the Reformation began, proceeded, and influenced. But this is an academic work, not something that would appeal to a more general audience (which is why it is 4 star instead of 5).

Lots of detail about one of the most important periods in European history. It really opened my eyes to a large part of American culture that resulted from the particular brands of Protestantism that made it over here (though the treatment of early American protestantism is not really covered except in a quick overview). For example -- what are the different roots of the White and Black southern protestantisms? Why did those rather extreme Scottish (+ Scots-Irish) Presbyterians have such an influence over the US? He devotes equal weight to the Counter-Reformation -- so any of you who are Catholic or were raised in that religion would benefit from understanding the roots of "modern" Catholicism. Confessionals? Catechism? All counter-reformational. That said, I do wish he had an editor. Some parts just go into too much detail, and he lose the narrative thread. Someone else remarked that this is about the trees not the forest, and that is only partly true. The overarching themes of Reformation as Humanism, of the meaning of the Eucharist, of challenges and rebuffs to Papal authority do create a certain unity. But as you are diverted through the Transylvanian reformation, and the Polish-Lithuanian reformation, etc. --- while interesting in their own right -- it is easy to lose track of the the larger picture. I do wish the 30 years war had been covered in more detail, but that may be asking too much from an already 700 pp. tome.

I've just finished reading this and I already know that I'll be returning to it for reference and probably rereading sections as well. There is just so much history wrapped up in this single volume that it would be impossible to remember or understand all of it in one read.MacCullouch does a fine job of balancing the views and actions of Catholics and all the versions of Protestants that arose from the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. The core of the argument between these two varieties of Christianity is whether the Bible should be the go-to guide (Protestant) or whether the Church's teachings are of primary importance (Catholic). Of course, like all human endeavors, religion, politics, economics, art, and personality cults all play their role in history. This is an area of history that I've generally avoided, as my area of interest is nineteenth-century England and technology. But when I realized that I wasn't understanding some social issues because their roots lie in the Reformation, I signed up for a graduate-level Renaissance and Reformation class. MacCullouch's book is one of several on the reading list, but the only one aimed at the Reformation. At first glance, this 708-page text (plus notes, bibliography, and index) looks overwhelming, especially if you have to read it in a short amount of time, such as in a class. But I found the professor's writing style to be very clear and it wasn't a chore to read the book. I had so many "aha!" moments when reading this book I can't begin to list them here. Some other reviewers have complained that this single book cannot span the historical and intellectual range of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, and they're right. No single book or author could accomplish that. But what MacCullouch has done is to write a very readable single volume that introduces many of the themes of that history. He does not focus on a single individual, although some, such as Luther, were certainly very important in the history of the Reformation and are mentioned much more than once. That is to be expected, but it doesn't detract from the quality of the material, and it doesn't mean that MacCullouch never writes about anyone else. He does. What perhaps was most helpful to me was the last chapter, which summed up some of the current-day arguments over religious beliefs, both in America and Europe, and pointed out how they are just ongoing examples of what amounts to a continuation of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. If you have any curiosity about this era or want to understand the breach between Catholicism and Protestantism, this book is an excellent first choice. Just be forewarned that, while this book is not exceedingly difficult, neither is it a "dummies" book, and you should come to it knowing a little history in order to get the most out of it. Don't be put off by the sheer size of the book.

This book is scholarly, witty, and fascinating. MacCulloch has taken a subject full of controversy and oversize individuals and made the book a page turner. There are no heroes in this book, only blood, guts, executions, trials, and internicene hatreds. The horrors of the Inquisition are shown not to be the sole purview of the Catholics--after all, Calvin burned Servetus at the stake for disagreeing with him about the Trinity, and he beheaded a few others for various reasons. The author's sense of humor is always present--he tells us that the reformers liked to sport long beards so that they would resemble Old Testament patriarchs, and then he introduces two pictures of reformers with cascading, curly beards covering their chests. He teases the reader with the puzzle of who wrote the Reformation hymn "Faith of our Fathers" and the answer will astonish you. MacCulloch was a high Anglican, but he deals with the controversies of the Reformation in an even-handed manner. At the end he reminds us that the Reformation stretched from 1517 to 1700, and Europeans were at peace for only thirty of those years. At the end, the borders had moved, but Catholics were still Catholics and Protestants were still Protestant, although very heterogeneous. This book is that rare thing--an exciting history book.

I loved this book. The reflections of these two geologists pre-sage our 21st century understanding of evolutionary developmental biology. I grew up in a hunting family and have studied natural history all my life. The Namib is the one most formidable places on Earth. I laughed many times at how God protects fools and little children as these two men struggled with survival in the wilderness.Reading this book is also sobering when one considers the level of habitat degradation due to human activities that has happened since their account. My complaint is with the publishers. Anytime the text started a word with "cl" it was changed to "d." Some passages were rendered completely nonsensical and/or unreadable. That is a great shame. I guess I will look for a paper copy in a rare book store.

"The magic of the desert is hard to define. Why does the sight of a landscape of empty sand, rocks, slab and rubble stir the spirits more than a view of lush green fields and woods? Why does the lifeless play of light, colour, and distance have such an invigorating, fascinating and elating effect ? Perhaps because no limitations are imposed by other forms of life; perhaps because the mind of the beholder is presented with a fata morgana of unlimited freedom. And on such far horizons the outline of a mountain draws the eye like an island in the endless ocean." Henno MartinThis book is magical. Whether it was in the simple straight forward story telling or in my immediate captivation by a most unlikely undertaking into a forbidding landscape I don't know, but I was hooked right off. This is an inspired account of two friends and a dog escaping from a war they did not want to participate in, and to avoid imprisonment by the German army, they drove their lorry into the most inhospitable terrain imaginable, the Namib desert, where they lived for two and one half years. Imagine as your eyes confront a bleak wasteland of gullies, fissures, gorges and barren expanses of flat, chalky soils of salt, sand and rock that stretches limitlessly toward dark distant mountain ranges. What kind of adventures could anyone expect in such a forlorn place. A good place to hide though if you possess at least some rudimentary survival skills."We stared down in fascination. It was an impressive and intimidating sight, a landscape inconceivable under a more temperate sky and in milder latitudes. Barren cliffs fell away steeply into deep ravines all around the main canyon like a wild and gigantic maze. They had a name, the "Gramadullas", and as someone had aptly said, they looked as though the Devil had created them in an idle hour."So these men and their dog lived like the bushmen; hunting, searching for water, cooking, storing, preserving , often starving but....surviving. They were both geologists with a knowledge of the land, a surplus of down home imagination, ingenuity and an indomitable spirit. I often wished I were there with them even"when the sun rose we were half buried. Our hair, eyes and ears were full of sand and at breakfast the springbok meat crunched between our teeth. The wind had become noticeably warmer and on the chalk plateau it was so strong that we could lean against it. A red veil of sand rose from a small dune into the blue sky. To the south a sand storm was raging and the dunes were covered with a reddish mist."I read about their experiences at waterholes where animals I had only seen in picture books or at a zoo were gathered to slake their thirst, sometimes communally, with natural predators next to them. Gemsbok, springbok, klipspringer, herds of zebra, ostriches, leopards, jackals and hyenas are sympathetically and adventurously described under exotic skies and shadowy rock formations. The author and his friend fabricate houses out of meager resources: mud, rocks and tamarisk. They live in caves and fashion there own tools. Together they speculate about the geological transformations in the topography. They philosophize about the evolution of Man and reasons behind war. There are stories describing their strenuous adventures following, sometimes for days, the spoors of the indigent animals in their search for water.Mr. Martins narrative is poetic. His words tapped into my unconscious as their adventures unfolded and the telling so descriptive and amicable I often wanted to be there."Our hair began to stand on end and with long bounding strides we ran from the plateau. We were hardly under the rock face when a blinding, hissing, stone-splitting fork of light dazzled us for seconds and the first great drops fell on our heads. We laughed and danced with delight--the first rain for nine months."Even if the day by day existence were totally monotonous and exhausting and there were virtually no tomorrow but just a repetition of the day gone by, I would at least be far from the chaos of war and its machine. And I would know it as sure as the silence enfolded me and the desert sheltered me as I fell asleep under a million stars."In our stone shelter we had left three narrow slits each about sixteen inches long. When we were sitting in wait early on the first morning a male ostrich came down the opposite side of the valley with a couple of hens. The cock-bird was still about four hundred yards or so away when suddenly it stopped and stared towards us. Was it possible that he had seen something at that distance?"...................."During this inspection we sat as still as mice, but the ostrich remained suspicious and refused to come any nearer." ..................."About an hour later five more ostriches came down the valley along the same track. Seeing so many springbok and gemsbok at the water they probably assumed that the coast was clear and that there was no need for special caution. But then suddenly the first cock-bird stepped into their path with out-stretched wings, obviously barring their way like a policeman halting the crowds. The gesture was unmistakeable. The newcomers stopped and they too looked over towards our hiding place, whilst the first cock-bird joined his two hens sitting in the sand.Herman and I looked at each other, speechless. Not only had these strange birds incredibly sharp eyes but they also obviously had something like a sense of responsibility even towards strange birds belonging to other flocks. The ostriches did not come down to the water at all that morning, and at midday they all marched off."Henno MartinFrom "The Nabu Domain Reprints""This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. We believe this book is culturally important, and despite the imperfections, have elected to bring it back into print........."

The book's text content by the great geologist Henno Martin is a spectacular piece of desert writing, but this particular edition (with the clock on the cover) is VERY disappointing--the photographic plates are highly pixelated scans of the original sketches and basically worthless. It would be comical if one had only paid a few dollars, but at the over-$20 list price here, it's farcical. If you're thinking of buying this book in advance of a trip to Namibia, it's much better to wait until you arrive in southern Africa, where you can find good editions on sale in all major bookstores.

A great book and humbling to read about what must have been such an incredible experience. I found it well written. My poor stars are actually for the publishers. Errors in spelling, missing words, words without meaning that seem made up, paragraphs just...missing, bad translation. Terrible. I would think most could be caused by poor OCR, but to not proof read after that process is crazy. I was amazed that any publishing house would put their name to this. Its really bad. I'm not going to ask Amazon for my money back. But I hope someone is able to do something about it

Enjoyed reading about their experiences and learning about the fauna and flora. Not a gripping read but interesting enough to finish. Kindle edition had lots of errors to read around. For example, what does this mean? "We cocked a snook at them, but they didn’t understand that, and Otto barked furiously." (Loc 3521)

This is an excellent, important, and valuable book. I am thankful to have been able to find a reprint, however, the quality of this reprint is very disappointing. The resolution of the photographic reproduction process is low, resulting in fuzzy, ragged-edged print and photographs that are absolutely undecipherable. A reprint of this quality would be reasonable at a lower price. Since the photos were taken by the author, they are an important, and missing, part of the experience. You may be better suited looking for an original print edition from your library system.

Rather than being put in a detention camp, two German geologists in Namibia during WWII, spent two and a half years surviving in the desert wilderness. They drove in an all terrain vehicle to a remote area, bringing with them flour, oatmeal, beans, jam, and dried fruit. They had a shot gun and a pistol to kill wild game, the preferred meat being gemsbok, now called oryx. It tells of learning survival skills, moving camp three times, worrying about being found by authorities. The author also writes of the thrill of living in nature, the beauty of sunsets and stars, He and his partner also discuss evolution and question the survival of the fittest theory, believing that cooperation with others might be a more important factor in survival. I enjoyed this book very much. PH

This book is in the public domain so and no longer available in bookstores. I read it years ago and enjoyed it so much that I looked for it in English. Apparently it's available in the original German. Pictures didn't copy at all...distorted. I enjoyed it as much the second time as the first reading!

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

Beyond words the beauty lies in its simplicity. Very powerful meditative book to enable one to sink and merge within the divine within. This book is to be used as a daily meditative tool to see oneself beyond the mind. The heart of every great spiritual teaching lies in this pocket book and the best thing is it is so direct and does not postpone ones finding of god to a set of future goals or more courses or more reading which is a common trap in spiritual world dictated by minds weakness of more, however this book is a sword it cuts the veil of ignorance and points directly to the light within. Must have for everyone seeking god and truth. Must have for people who wish to experience the essence of scriptures practically as jesus said first seek the kingdom of God rest everything will be added or as guru nanak said man jeetai jag jeet see yourself beyond the mind and conquer the world or as the Hadith from prophet says those who seek Allah find themself and those who seek their self find Allah or any scripture whatever it says is shown practically by this little gem now and now.

The Kindle version is crammed together with letters on top of each other. Also, it will only let you read in landscape mode. This definitely needs to be fixed quickly. For those of us who have bought a Kindle version, a refund would be nice.I updated the book when Amazon told me it had been fixed and found no difference in the formatting.

The formatting/readability issue on Kindle devices appears fixed (this review edited 3 November) - and great on my iPad and iPhone. 5 stars for the flawless, clear and direct pointing to What-Is, the divine presence that’s always here but so easily overlooked. If you’re wondering what all this non-dual talk (and so much unfortunately is just talk) about awareness, being is experientially all about, then GET THIS - you’ll be drenched in the simplicity and depth of your own self nature. I feel deeply grateful this came my way.

The words and the experience from these words are above and beyond incredible. The guidance is like nothing else. After listening to Mooji's live meditation recording of An Invitation to Freedom, I just had to have the the book. Reading each page takes me back to that place of absolute Peace & Is-ness. Listen to him guiding the audience first and then read and re-read this book. It is a Must Have little book. Enjoy it.

We are all the Supreme Consciousness. At this very moment, always, and forever. But then there's the "mind". This mind that seems to be attached to this body at this time, and always reminding me of the conditioning of thousands of earthly lifetimes. A blessing that I can't remember all the accumulated karma from all of them, but still little bits seem to leak through daily life, hanging on.Freedom is here now, as Mooji points out in this little book, but, making the leap to just let go, that's the Rub. He puts it so succinctly. It's that simple, but it's that complicated, as well. The trick is to stop "trying', anything.Perhaps on about the 10th reading.

After years of reading and intellectualizing about finding my true self, this brought it home. I first listened to the audible version and then read this and it has literally changed my entire outlook on life.

Formatting still messed up, leaving the book unusable still. Far from his first book i don't understand such poor review/ quality control from an experienced author (Team) as Mooji. Please fix!!

I thought this was a book - it was the price of a book. I really feel like Mooji robbed me, it's disheartening.... and reflects very badly on the company. This is a tiny pamphlet.
