This novella could stand on it's own, even if you haven't seen "The Expanse" TV show or read any of the other books, if you read apocalyptic/sci-fi at all, you would enjoy this.If you are familiar with the universe in which this novel stands, it's a really good close look at one character that explains a lot of subtext in the rest of the stories. How did Timothy/Amos get his name? What's it like to grow up on Earth in this time frame if you aren't a Mao or some privileged child? Why is Amos a stone cold killer? If he is a stone cold killer, why work a straight job and not become a pirate or mercenary? Why the dog-like devotion to Naomi? How did he become so good with rocket engines and other mechanical tasks?Bonus chuckles if you are familiar with Baltimore.
Throughout all seven 'The Expanse' novels, reference is obliquely made to Amos' unsavory past in Earth's Baltimore. Just prior to the asteroid bombardment, we even see him back in Baltimore, where he is referred to as 'Timmy' by his former associates. "The Churn" fills in that information, as we learn more about Amos' early life and his 'origin' (I'm not gonna' spoil it!).I'm glad I read this little novella, but it is really little. I reached the end and started scanning around for the next chapter, as I figured there had to more than just this little bit. But, that indeed is all there is. I find this somewhat surprising, given the 'thickness' and scope of the novels, and I almost feel a little taken advantage of, and ripped-off. The 8th novel won't be available until some time near mid-2019. In the meantime, I can pay what amounts to about the Kindle price of one of the novels to get a number of little snippets that, by all rights, probably should have been in one of the novels anyway.
This is my first foray into the writing of James SA Corey as a current viewer of the television show and WOW! This book does such a clever, brilliant job of filling us in on some of the backstory of one of our most favoritest characters. The writing is top notch, painting for us a world that is in decline but not devoid of hope. Earth is caught in a terrible middle of poverty (but not really), law (but not really), and crime (sort of). The sheer misanthropy of the world is tangible. I love it.As a standalone story I'm not sure how it would be received. If you have no idea what The Expanse is, either in print or on screen, then it might serve as a nice aperitif, an introduction to this strangely realistic future. Or it will confuse and bore you. Either way, give it a shot!
A small story, and I mean small, showing a bit of the backstory of one The Expanse series regular Amos Burton. Set on earth it tells what was going on in Baltimore during "The Churn". Not just a book title, one of the characters in the books refers to the upcoming turmoil as this having gone through versions of this before.The new characters that were introduced are kind of interesting, the standard mob boss type of guy, the crippled friend (although I will give the writers credit here as the reason why he's considered disabled was something I haven't seen before) and the older love interest, although more motherly might be a better description there.. Given that this takes place before the Expanse series proper and already know Amos' fate it still a good tale seeing how he got from here to there. Although I'm not sure I'd pay the full price, again really short story, if you're a fan of the series I'd definitely say pick it up if you catch it on sale.
Good "origin story."I finished the third season of the Expanse TV series the night before I bought this. I was curious to get more info on this series, and the novella was just the right way for me to dip my toe in the books.The Churn gives the backstory of fan favorite character, Amos Burton, the not-very-gentle giant crewman of the Rocinante. On the series, his past is alluded to, but is unlikely to ever be depicted (the show has so many irons in the fire). So I thought I'd give the Churn a try.Turns out that was a good decision. Corey's prose is very good, and the story works well to fill in gaps of Amos' background. From here, I've gone on to purchase the first three novels in the Expanse series. Now I just need time to read them all.
Brisk, cutline prose. A brief and stirring reminder of the delicate balances at play in a world of unpredictable reversals and hard truths. With crushing populations and decade long lines just to apply for off world privilege, it's easy to get lost in the churn. This is a great prelude to a longer story, the burgeoning of an unlikely hero, an amiable and unassuming youth with a talent for violence sees his world shatter. What he does with the pieces will dictate the schema of the rest of his life.
Eric Davies is no where near as good as Jefferson Mays, you will understand once you hear Gods of Risk. Eric has the same low soft wraspy heave of a voice for all women characters - its terrible. But Eric's voice works amazingly well for this - especially the long, intensely descriptive sections describing Baltimore.If you want to know more about Amos Burton this is itMy favorite Novella by far
I like the way the novella fit into the entire series, not really adding to the basic story but expanding on a theme that was briefly introduced without further details. Could have fit directly into the main books, but they were already pretty long. I have read all of the available originals at least twice and was immediately familiar and at home
