Review

A "Must read" from the New York Post "Gripping." —Outside "Harrowing."—Us Weekly "MacKeen weaves multiple historical sources for corroboration and context, but her main material, Stepan’s unpublished memoir, lands the emotional punch of personal narrative. MacKeen’s added perspective is what makes this book though. A moving portrait of one family’s relationship to the past that offers surprising hope for reconciliation." —Toronto Globe & Mail "MacKeen doesn’t shirk from recounting the grisly details of genocide, describing brutal beatings, hunger to the point of cannibalism, and thirst to the point of urine-drinking. With a health-care reporter’s deft touch, she manages to play down the utter pathos, but her dedication to baring gruesome facts is as unfailing as her loyalty to the mission thrust upon her." —Barron's "Investigative journalist MacKeen always knew her grandfather escaped the Armenian Genocide before building a new life in the United States, but much of her family’s incredible origins were masked by time, cultural boundaries, and systematic government denial. The author set out to bring her family’s past into the present by translating her grandfather Stepan Miskjian’s exhaustive personal journals, researching archival documents, and traveling to Turkey and Syria to retrace his steps and meet the Muslim family that saved him and other Armenians from certain death. The narrative alternates perspectives between MacKeen’s quest and her grandfather’s odyssey. Through his journals, Stepan came alive. He was no longer solely the victim of a holocaust, but clever, hard-working, and even a prankster. He was a peddler, an entrepreneur, a soldier for the Ottoman Empire during World War I, and a highly valued servant of a powerful Sheikh. VERDICT This previously untold story of survival and personal fortitude is on par with Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken. Further, this is a tale of tracing your family roots and learning about who you are. It will have broad appeal for a wide range of readers." —Library Journal, STARRED review "Readers will find themselves drawn into the whirlpool of events, soon forgetting the author's presence . . . powerful, terrible stories about what people are willing to do to other people—but leavened with hope and, ultimately, forgiveness.” —Kirkus Reviews —Kirkus Reviews “Part family heirloom, part history lesson, The Hundred-Year Walk is an emotionally poignant work, powerfully imagined and expertly crafted. The considerable archival scaffolding remains invisible as MacKeen carries her readers on an emotional journey full of heartache and hope.” —Aline Ohanesian, author of Orhan’s Inheritance “In her remarkable book, The Hundred-Year Walk, Dawn MacKeen has taken the Armenian genocide and shown us its terrifying flesh, blood, bone, and sinew. Her vehicle is her grandfather’s forced deportation, and she uses it to take the reader on a horrific ride into the heart of one of history’s darkest moments.” —S. C. Gwynne, author of Empire of the Summer Moon “I am in awe of what Dawn MacKeen has done here. With the meticulousness of a historian, the courage of an investigative reporter, and the compassion of a daughter mining a fraught and cherished family legacy, MacKeen has accomplished the near impossible. She has elucidated a complicated ethnic and political history through a delightfully literary lens. Her sentences sing. Her research shines. Her readers will be rapt—and a lot smarter by the end.” —Meghan Daum, author of The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion “By telling the riveting story of her grandfather Stepan, who—like the armies of refugees today—overcame daunting odds as he braved the Turkish gauntlet of death and walked across desert sands to safety, Dawn MacKeen drives home that we’re all part of the human family. The Hundred-Year Walk is an unforgettable contribution to the literature of suffering and memory, and to the growing conviction that we must say ‘Never again’ to the mass destruction of human life and culture." —David Talbot, author of The Devil’s Chessboard

From the Inside Flap

An epic tale of one man’s courage in the face of genocide and his granddaughter’s quest to tell his story  In the heart of the Ottoman Empire as World War I rages, Stepan Miskjian’s world becomes undone. He is separated from his family as they are swept up in the government’s mass deportation of Armenians into internment camps. Gradually realizing the unthinkable — that they are all being driven to their deaths — he fights, through starvation and thirst, not to lose hope. Just before killing squads slaughter his caravan during a forced desert march, Stepan manages to escape, making a perilous six-day journey to the Euphrates River carrying nothing more than two cups of water and one gold coin. In his desperate bid for survival, Stepan dons disguises, outmaneuvers gendarmes, and, when he least expects it, encounters the miraculous kindness of strangers.  The Hundred-Year Walk alternates between Stepan’s saga and another adventure that takes place a century later, after his family discovers his long-lost journals. Reading this rare firsthand account, his granddaughter Dawn MacKeen finds herself first drawn into the colorful bazaars before the war and then into the horrors Stepan later endured. Inspired to retrace his steps, she sets off alone to Turkey and Syria, shadowing her resourceful, resilient grandfather across a landscape still rife with tension. With his journals in hand, she grows ever closer to the man she barely knew as a child. Their shared story is a testament to family, to home, and to the power of the human spirit to transcend the barriers of religion, ethnicity, and even time itself.

The Hundred-Year Walk: An Armenian Odyssey(Spoiler alert) The number of times reporter and writer Dawn Anahid MacKeen’s maternal grandfather Stepan Miskjian escaped death during World War I at the hands of the Ottoman Turks is mind boggling. This is a graphic, disturbing, but ultimately redemptive account of one very resourceful man’s survival during the first genocide of the 20th century—when the ruling pashas set out to exterminate Turkey’s large ethnic Armenian population.MacKeen alternates Stepan’s story with her own experiences in 2007 retracing his steps. His diaries in hand, she traveled from his hometown of Adabazar outside Constantinople, all the way to the killing fields of Deir El Zor in present-day Syria, where the surviving Armenians were mercilessly slaughtered. Ironically, this region is now in the hands of the so-called Islamic State. The author manages to turn an unbearable subject into a page-turner. With each chapter you wonder how the 5-foot 4-inch Stepan will slip away from his captors—armed, saber-wielding gendarmes on horseback—and evade being swept back into the massive deportation of Turkey’s Armenian population.MacKeen’s clean, spare reporting style is dispassionate but descriptive. We are transported to that place and time. We see what Stepan saw and survive the horrors alongside him. He is resourceful, intelligent, generous and scrupulously honest throughout his ordeal, while many around him are not. We root for the diminuitive hero throughout. My only regret is that MacKeen does not offer the reader even more about her own experiences and travels retracing her grandfather’s steps.Ultimately, Stepan survives the killings thanks to a Bedouin sheik who shelters and employs him, and other Armenians, for the remainder of the war.In one chapter, MacKeen recounts how—with Assad’s secret police tracking her every move—she finds the sheik’s descendants and is able to thank them. They warmly welcome her and hold a feast in her honor. Sadly, the region today is being visited by fresh horror that is threatening the lives and livelihoods of her grandfather’s saviors.Stepan, himself, is compelled to bear witness to all that he saw, even after emigrating to the United States, a land he loved and where he found security and financial success. He remained haunted by memories. Surely his journals helped exorcise them, yet he speaks repeatedly of his experiences to his wife and daughters, including Dawn’s mother Anahid. But, without the stories and without the diaries, MacKeen’s mother would never have pleaded with her reporter daughter to “tell Baba’s story.” I’m glad that she did.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Having a friend of mine who is Armenian, I have talked to him about the Armenian genocide and hade a little bit of background information. The information I took away from this book, and the experience of Stepan Miskjian, was profound.Stepan Miskjian was a young Armenian man, living in Turkish Armenia in 1913 when his whole world turned upside down. His story, which he wrote down in journals, was kept hidden and lost in his own family for nearly 100, until they were discovered by his daughter and his granddaughter. After translating his words, his granddaughter - Dawn Anahid McKeen - embarks on a journey to retrace her grandfather's steps, to tell his story of the Armenian genocide and of his survival. The book is written between 2 worlds, essentially - Stepan's and his granddaughter's, Dawn. Through their words, the plight of the Turkish Armenians come to life vividly. This book does not read as "non-fiction" at all. This reads as an adventure story - until one realizes the death count is all too real. This book makes me wish I could have met Stepan Miskjian, but, in a way, I think I already have, and I feel honored to have been allowed to have shared in his life!

Beautifully written by the grandaughter of an Armenian holocaust survivor, who draws her story from the five notebooksher grandfather left behind as well as her own research and indefatigable efforts to retrace her grandfather's death marchacross the Syrian desert. The writing is so vivid that you feel the torment and agony of Stepan's journey even as youmarvel at his humanity and wonder at his desperate will to live. The cruelty of the Turkish government is interspersed with such beautiful acts of compassion from ordinary citizens including a Turkish soldier and Bedouin shiek—who intervenedat exactly the right moment to save Stepan's life—that ultimately you are left with hope.

My bride of 57 years; Father was Armenian and I grew to love her family. Them I became aware that their nation was the first nation that Germany and the Ottoman Empires joined together to try to make a nation of people disappear during World War I. We never know how we affect the other generations; that are following us. The story tellers Grandfather kept notes of what he saw; the families knew and kept grandpa's notes written in Armenian. A daughter asks mom about grandpa and this is the story of finding those who knew the language and discovered a story - but it was incomplete; you really needed to be there to understand what he saw - she went and walked the walk and learn to talk the talk of a journey where a million died along the way.

This is not a book for the faint of heart. The death and destruction wrought upon the Armenians during World War I is heart rendering. There is no motive on this earth that would have justified this genocide. As I read, I was alternately cheering for Stepan and Dawn on their separate journeys. For Stepan to have survived is as close to a miracle as one will get. I was not so much interested in style as I was the story. I liked the way the author juxtaposed the two because it gave you a sense of the past and the present political/cultural environments. I was enlightened by this novel having heard little concerning the Armenian’s plight. This was a story that needed to be told.

Brilliant book by a brilliant mind! Fascinating pre-Gurdjieff ideas that don't change post-Gurdjieff, knowledge and wisdom pouring from every page, fascinating travel adventures of a "higher man", a peek at pre-bolshevik Russia - what's not to like!

Well, I have had this great book for years so I suppose I must have ordered it here. I highly urge those who quest for knowledge to buy this or any of P.D.'s other books.

This is an awesome book for those in search for comparative writings in religious, philosophic, metaphysics ans more... the writing style alone is just inspiring a great deal... I love great writers!

this book is one of the treasures of my life. I wish I had known him. One of the top thinkers and authors you can read. I have one of the remaining 1923 original additions that I paid over $700 for a couple of decades ago. But I reread it so much I recently bought another from Amazon for about $12 buck so I could make my own personal notes in it. Words can not tell you about this book, you have to want, need to read it yourself.

Have read this book when it first cameout. Briliant book and well written, specialy for the first comers into this field.

The penultimate book in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series shares all the features that have made this series such a pleasure to read. It has imaginative modernization of classical mythology, likable and capable protagonists, wonderful humor mixed with doses of tragedy and pathos, all told in the sardonic first person by Percy Jackson. In addition we have the Labyrinth itself - virtually alive and as much a gripping and interesting character as any flesh and blood mortal, monster, god, or demigod. The action sequences are well choreographed and the overreaching plot and subplots that run through the entire series are pushed towards what promises to be an page turning climax. After I finished this book I immediately ordered the Last Olympian and some other Riordan titles. This is a juvenile series but I'm thinking there are plenty of adults like me that are having a blast following this fun series. Highly recommended.

My 11 yr old daughter loves this series and asked me to read it with her. I found myself reluctantly enjoying these books. I like the hidden morality lessons and the mythological component, which has inspired her to learn about the Greek gods independently. There is a romantic component between the characters which I could do without, but it's all PG and nothing too hot and heavy. Violence is a component of the books but it is limited and not graphic at all.

This books keep getting better and better, don't they?I want to make this brief and spoiler free, just in case someone who hasn't read the book reads it.I am 13 years old and hard to please in the reading department, really, the books that have always caught my attention are those of adventure and fantasy (for example Harry Potter) and this book has it.After reading The Titan's Curse I believed the books couldn't get any better, and I was proved wrong. The Battle of the Labyrinth is amazing, it has a lot of fighting, some interesting things about Greek mythology that I never knew about, a little romance (We all know we're just waiting for Percy's and Annabeth's friendship to evolve into something bigger!), funny stuff and much more!!We get to see more of characters that had disappeared (*cough* Nico *cough*) and meet very interesting new people!I highly recommend this, and if you're reading this then there's two things you can do:1. If you haven't read the book then what the hell are you waiting for? Go get it!2. If you have read this book then buy the next one! It's what I'm gonna do right now!

Well, this book was definitely a penultimate book. I think it ranks #4 of the 5 books in this series for me, mainly due to so much of it feeling like build up to what’s coming in the last book. The characters were all great and consistent to themselves which is always important, and there was nothing inherently wrong in the plot of this book but it just failed to launch for me. There wasn’t really any stakes or any moments I didn’t feel like things weren’t just being prepared for The Last Olympian.I do wish Riordan would slow his writing down though. I’m fully aware this is a middle grade book but that doesn’t mean you have to skimp in detail. There was such little detail a lot of the time in favor of skipping from one thing to the next to the next. It doesn’t ruin the story by any means but it sure does make it feel more shallow than necessary. Those are really my two main gripes. I think the Percy Jackson series is incredibly fun though, and I can’t wait to see where it’s going in the final book. 3 stars.

Each new book that I read in this series is better than the last one. This is probably because I'm getting to know the characters a little more each time, and I have some back stories about them to reflect on from the previous books. As usual I'll try to keep my thoughts spoiler free.Rick Riordan has once again cleverly entwined the mythical world of demigods into the modern world in such a great way. I really liked the concept in this book. The Labyrinth is an amazing setting and is so mysterious. It's a place that has so many possibilities and potential for adventure, that I hope we haven't seen the last of it.Percy is once again on a mission that is full of danger and humour, to stop the baddies from passing through the Labyrinth and into Camp Half-Blood. Aside from the main characters, a number of others have carried over from the previous books. They have added some interesting new sub-plots to keep an eye on and I'm guessing that these characters will have pivotal roles in the next book. I have to say, that I found Nico quite annoying, but I put that down to clever writing that has created a character that is triggering my emotions. No doubt, the next book will build on his story and I will hopefully understand why he is like he is, and why he annoys me so much. Privately, I'm also suspicious of one/more character/s, but I'll let the next book prove me either right or wrong. The Battle of the Labyrinth is another great instalment in the Percy Jackson series. I'm keen to get straight into the next and final book to see if everything turns to rotten eggs, or if the world will survive. I'm confident I know which ending it will be, but it's the journey that fills the books that we love to read, not just the ending.

Urrrrrrgggg!!!!!!! I am rereading this series, and because I know what will happen, I am so frustrated that some things did not happen in this book!!!!! This book was great, and I loved it, and I almost CRIED when I finished it because it ended on a cliffhanger!!! Then I remembered that I had already bought the last book and I was okay again! I agree with the 5-star ratings and comments given for Steve Dunham's "The Editor's Companion: An Indispensable Guide to Editing Books, Magazines, Online Publications, and More." I do not know what more I can add other than giving my own 5-star rating. I like the book because it is presented in an easy-to-understand way. Also, I like how Dunham includes the wisdom of the editors that he knows. The "look inside" should give the buyer a good idea of the book layout. I found the book well designed--not crammed with information. Dunham provides good leads to additional resources on editing.

7.5/10This is a basic introduction to editing, no matter you are a beginner editor, a peer-reviewer or just want to edit your own texts. One expects the book of a professional editor to be good, easy to understand, and well organised, and, generally speaking, this is the case.Although many of the things Dunham recommends are a bit too obvious (especially if writing is part of your job or just your job) they should never be forgotten. At times, it is painful seeing academics doing the sort of mistakes that Dunham mentions in this book. Actually, these are some of the mistakes I do make while writing for work, or writing a review. The book is clearly written, without any pomposity or technical jargon. A priori, I thought this would be a dry book, but I found it to be not only useful and practical, but an enjoyable light reading as well. The chapter I find most interesting and useful is chapter 9 (The Editor's Tools), which not only provides us with a commented bibliography and list of online resources, but also an example of check-list. I also enjoyed Dunham's comments on the relationship with editors and authors in chapter 9, which are great to level your head when correcting somebody else's work, something that I find difficult because I get exasperated by some people's "crappola". And also all his comments on the use of Wikipedia. Some of his comments on common grammatical and orthographical mistakes are spot on and very easy to understand, therefore, very useful. I also like some of the explanations Dunham gives about confusing (fusing) words. I noticed that, while he explains the rule on how to use brackets, for example, he says it in a way in which brackets are used and incorporated into the explanation without the need of any example. Cool, even tubular ;)The examples Dunham uses come from different mediums (newspapers, Government reports, novels and monographs, among others) and show, not only that there are too many crappy texts out there, but also that a good editor can morph an ugly text into something correct, intelligible and even elegant. On that regard, chapters 9 (Samples of Editing) and 10 (The ones that got away) are especially entertaining and self-explanatory.Yes, editing is the make-up artistry of the language -- It turns anything average into a beautiful looking thing.I find great that a professional editor reminds us that spell-checking is not a sin, or something just for foreigners. The end-noting system is great, very academic, and it is perfectly linked back and forward in the Kindle edition.EDITING THE EDITORThe book examines and includes all types of editing. You will find similar challenges and methodical approach to editing any type of text. However, editing for a newspaper, or for an academic journal or the Government are intrinsically different as they target different readers, and they do so in different ways regarding language used and length and depth of the text. You cannot expect the general reader to understand technical stuff, but you expect academics working on a given discipline to deal easily with it. So, I would have liked a chapter devoted to the challenges that different publications and texts demand from the editor, and the way editors face them. Some of the explanations about punctuation were just sketched, too general, and not clear enough, for example, the use of Em and En dashes.I would have placed chapter 9 after chapter 10, included some of the subjects mentioned in the appendix in chapter 10 and enlarge them, and offer a separate bibliography and resources section. Besides, the bibliography mentioned is a bit old. Even though the books are classics, or manuals that any editor should have, there must be most updated improved editions., And why not including some other specialised books?I found odd that the pages of some articles mentioned in the endnotes have no pages mentioned. They come from newspapers and other periodical publications. I was taught, that even when the article comes from a newspaper, you provide the reader with the page where the article is found. There must be a reason why pages are not mentioned with those articles. Were they retrieved online? Is there an rule about this that professional editors follow? Now, how much quoting is too much? Well... too many quotes are always too much. Elements of Style and Words into Type are mentioned ad nauseam, so I ended wondering, if these books are so great, why bothering writing anything else? Dunham is a professional experienced editor, so I wanted to hear his voice loud and distinctly clear, even if he shares the same opinions and approaches to work with other editors. In fact, Dunham shines when he does so, when he is his own self, and speaks from his own experience without paraphrasing or quoting anybody. Most of the grammar elements and common mistakes he discuses in his book are great, but we can find that sort of information in any basic grammar book, like Practical English Usage or a Practical English Grammar, just to mention two examples of exhaustive reliable books coming from Oxford University. However, I missed a chapter on footnoting or endnoting; too many writers and academics do not use notes properly, they do not know where to place them, or what sort of information to include in them. The same can be said of creating indexes, bibliography and glossaries, or your own style sheet. Said differently, how would an editor approach endnotes, footnotes, bibliography, indexes and glossaries in a given text? How to edit those?IN SHORTI found the reading good and entertaining, and, as a first good approach to editing, a great book with plenty of useful items of advice. I was expecting an ABC of editing, but for that you have to go elsewhere.

I am trying to further my abilities and this book gives amazing examples, when I had added this book to my cart it was accompanied by at least $300 worth of other books in the like, I think there were 20 some odd editing/grammar/punctuation books in my cart at the time. And with the vast and ever growing database of knowledge that is the internet I chose this one to help me on my journey. It has been a slow reading process for me, because I like to apply what I learn as I learn. This book has been an indispensable guide. I was making progress after only reading the first two pages. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to become a better editor or writer.

Reviewed by C J Singh (Berkeley, California)An Excellent Book on Editing BasicsIf your interest is in learning editing basics using Associated Press (AP) Stylebook, this book is an excellent introduction.(However, if your interest is in learning editing basics using The Chicago Manual of Style, Amy Sohn's book on Copyediting would be my recommendation -- see my review on amazon.)Steve Dunham is a highly experienced editor, thoroughly familiar with the yearly updates of the Associated Press Stylebook. The preface opens: “Editing—Who needs it? As a writer I write things that I think will be clear to everybody, but an editor says, ‘No, no, Steve,’ and I realize my error. Thank God for editors.” I like his voice already. In the next sentence Dunham quotes Laura Moyer, a copy editor: “Nobody loves a copy editor, but everybody needs one." "Even though we make errors seven days a week,” she noted on another occasion. Moyer’s sentences appeared in her blog dated six months apart and Dunham accurately marked them as endnotes 1 and 2. This inspires confidence in the accuracy of his 220 endnotes. The 242-page text is presented in 11 chapters:1. Marks of Good Writing;2. Editing for Content;3. Editing for Focus;4. Editing for Precise Language;5. Editing for Grammar;6. Typography;7. A Few Tips;8. Editorial Relationships;9. The Editors Tools;10. Samples of Editing;11. One’s That Got Away.I enjoyed reading these chapters. Here are some examples. In the second chapter, Dunham agrees with The Associated Press Stylebook’s” advice on “obscenities, profanities, vulgarities: Do not use them in stories unless they are part of direct quotations and there is a compelling reason for them.” (p 25; citation 25)In the fourth chapter, Dunham cites Michael Gerson of the Washington Post “lamenting a decline in media standards”: Cable and the Internet now allow Americans, if they choose, to get their information entirely from sources that agree with them –- sources that reinforce and exaggerate their political predispositions.” (p 59; citation 102)In the ninth chapter, the 22-item annotated list of the editor's tools includes: “ ' The Dictionary of Misinformation' by Tom Burnham. Why would you want books of misinformation? Not so you can repeat it, but so you can eradicate it from the documents you edit.” (p 153). “ 'The Quote Investigator' by Garson O’Toole, exhaustively investigates the sources of quotations, which are indexed by author or purported author.” (p 156).An enjoyable introduction to AP Stylebook basics.
