First of all, I got the Kindle version and it is perfect for genealogy to be able to electronic search, copy web links, tips and lists into OneNote (or EverNote) without manually rewriting them. Anyone who says this book is an old repeat of Ancestry.com Help pages has NOT read the book. It is full of advice, strategies and tips and as of today (Feb 16, 2015) was last updated in 2014. Of course there are some how-to's to do certain tasks and why not? But instead of re-writing all the Ancestry Help pages the author sometimes just provides live links to Ancestry.com Help. Instead of Ancestry's FAQ style of instruction this book is more of a conversational workflow style. Between this book, Ancestry Help and the Ancestry Community you will probably have 90% of everything you will ever need for your genealogy. (anybody want to buy my 6 other genealogy books that are now redundant?)BTW you DO NOT need a Kindle tablet to read a Kindle book. You can download the book on your own device type (Mac, PC or mobile) with the suitable app. All my How-To books are now going to be in Kindle version.

I am a four year member of Ancestry and have always found the Unofficial Guide to be a very helpful book. If you are looking for the maximum benefit from your membership then you should get this book

Not exactly what I expected. I thought this would be a guide to using Ancestry.com, sort of like an "Ancestry for Dummies" book, but it's not. It's more generalized about the various ways to find genealogy info on other websites and NOT so much on how to work with the Ancestry.com website. It has some good info, so I gave it 2 stars, but it's certainly not what I expected or wanted. For example, I really needed instruction on how to transfer info from another person's tree to my tree when we had a mutual ancestor, or how to correct errors (and there are ton of them) and that kind of thing is not covered at all that I could find. It's incorrectly titled, very misleading, as far as I'm concerned.

I am writing this review from a narrow perspective. The content looks very good but the small font, light print, and poor images (e.g. see Card Catalog on page 61) make it difficult for many older people to read. Considering that many people interested in genealogy are older people, this lack of readability is a drawback. What the author/publisher need to do, in my opinion, is invest more money in producing a quality, readable product (e.g. see "The Everything Guide to Online Genealogy' by Kimberly Powell). Joe B..

I love this book. There is so much about Ancestry I didn't know. So many "extra" places to go to search. I keep it close as one of my best "to go to" research tools.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to using Ancestry.com for family research. I read other books and they were not as helpful. This book was easy to read and understand with examples.

Excellent book on using complicated software! Ancestry.com may look simple at first, but it's easy to make mistakes. This book helps guide you through the possible pitfalls and explains various techniques of getting the most out of your subscription. A must for every user!

6-3-2016 Book has NOT been updated for 2016, per a phone call with the publishing company this morning. There are no plans, at this date, for an update. The publishing company has no control over what is written on the Amazon site.In bold print: "updated in 2016 to include the most recent changes to the site"Initial impressions: Detailed index (always a plus). I will be especially interested in the interaction between Ancestry and Family Tree Maker.Future updates as available.

Because They Hate: A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns America, by Brigitte Gabriel

From Publishers Weekly

With strident confidence, American Congress for Truth founder Gabriel rebukes the American public for being "weak, asleep or careless" in the face of Muslim terrorism. A Christian survivor of the vicious civil war between Lebanese Christians and Muslims in the 1970s, Gabriel leans on her own terrifying experiences to condemn Muslims, without apparent regard for their ethnicity, ideology or historical role. Consistently using the words "Muslim" and "Arab" as if they were interchangeable, she concludes that the U.S. is "facing total destruction" at the hands of people who are uncultured and cruel, and prescribes such solutions as "profile, profile and profile," and banning "hate education" in Islamic institutions. Though her writing is eloquent and her passion tremendous, Gabriel's strict dichotomy between "evil versus goodness" is too extreme to be informative. Readers will be forced to decide whether or not to accept her heart-felt bias. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Review

"Brigitte Gabriel eloquently reminds America what is truly at stake in this struggle against terrorism: our families, our way of life, and our hopes. Ms. Gabriel's personal account of her own experience is riveting, compelling and spellbinding. This is a must read for the entire American public . . . This book contains monumental revelations that will shock and disturb you. But it is also a story of an indomitable spirit--Brigitte's-- that will move you."--Steve Emerson, author of American Jihad: The Terrorists Living Amongst Us, Executive Director, the Investigative Project on Terrorism "A compelling and captivating personal story with a powerful lesson about threats to freedom in our time."--R. James Woolsey, Director of Central Intelligence, 1993-95"Brigitte Gabriel's story is at once intensely personal and possessing global significance . . . the story of her family and her childhood encapsulates the threat that faces the entire free world today. Brigitte Gabriel's words should be read, and studied carefully, by all the law enforcement and government officials of the West -- as well as by everyone who values freedom." -- Robert Spencer, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades) "Because They Hate should be read by all to understand radical Islam. Brigitte . . . . This book gives dire warning of what is to come if the democratic and Western world does not take responsible action to protect its people and societies.  The United States is the primary target as Islamic Radicalism attempts to spread its worldwide dominance."--Paul E. Vallely, Maj. General US Army (Ret.), FOX News Channel Military Analyst, and coauthor of Endgame: The Blueprint for Victory in the War on Terror

This fantastic book chronicles the life of the author, who survived through years of radical Islamic terror. If you desire to know what real evil looks like you need to read this book. The author was born and raised in southern Lebanon and she relates the terror her and her family went through when radical militant Muslims poured into her country and declared jihad against Lebanese Christians. This revealing book is organized into fourteen chapters. She tells of her early childhood in which she and her family were happy and there was some degree of peace in chapter one (Peace before the rage). Chapter two she relates was her 9/11 when things changed forever. Life under terror is covered in chapter three. She explains of her hopeless existence in chapter four. Chapter five deals with a life-changing experience. Her and her family begins rebuilding their lives in chapter six. She explains the clash of civilizations in chapter seven. Chapter eight she tells about the terrorists among us. The toxic tsunami of hate is explored in chapter nine. The radical Islamic influence on American College Campuses is covered in chapter ten. The Bull’s-eye of the Middle East is explained in chapter eleven. Chapter twelve the author relates how societies are not created equal. She asks the question in chapter thirteen, “Is Islam a peaceful Religion?” In the final chapter she comes to the conclusion, which many people have in our society about “political correctness gone mad. This is a book every American needs to read to better understand how dangerous it is to ignore a radical religion bent on destroying every other person who believes differently from them.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

I came upon this book after viewing a video of Brigitte Gabriel's where she was speaking on a panel regarding the Benghazi murders when a Muslim woman asked a question about the ideology of terrorism. Mrs. Gabriel's answer was so authoritative and direct when she spoke about the irrelevance of peaceful Muslims in the world when the 15-25% of radicals want to kill us and our way of life. I had to know more about this woman who spoke so powerfully.I was thrilled to learn of two books written by Brigitte who experienced first hand how a democratic country like Lebanon can be overtaken by a violent and intolerant religion like Islam. In this book, she makes a comparison of the way of life in Lebanon as the same as the United States, and that we too can be defeated by the enemy if we do not heed the warnings. One important point the author makes is that we must listen to what the enemy is telling us which is that they want to take over the world for Allah by any means necessary. It is evident by the acts of terror around the world that they are serious about that threat. This book has permanently affected me. I will not be uneducated and uniformed again about politics and the war on terrorism which will be a constant problem for the world for many generations. I have always appreciated being born into the freedom I have enjoyed in the United States. For the first time, I feel like I can make a difference by sharing this book and my knowledge with those around me. The average American is so busy with there daily lives that they are unaware of the great evil that's living amongst us and ready to pounce. We must arm ourselves with knowledge, involve ourselves in local and federal governments, and become skilled at using weapons.

Because They Hate: A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns AmericaMs. Gabriel was born a Christian in Lebanon to a mom in her 50s. The mom and her husband had been trying for decades to conceive. Although she was not a boy, the preferred gender in her community, her parents adored her.Her dad was a well-off, retired government employee, and the three of them enjoyed a truly blissful, idyllic life together in their little village."Marjayoun was a small, peaceful town ... with about three thousand citizens. There were Catholic and Protestant churches and a cemetery. The church bells rang for services, prayers, weddings, and funerals. We had a town center where we did most of our shopping, and one movie theater, which doubled as a place for community activities and school stage productions. There was a Catholic school, a private school, and public elementary and high schools. Some people were farmers who worked the fields down in the valley. Some were businessmen who had hardware stores, grocery stores, clothing stores, beauty parlors, and restaurants. We had an elected city council and mayor. It was a close-knit country town that you might drive through in five minutes."Each and every day, when Brigitte would return to her home, both parents would be waiting for her, with open arms, on the balcony of their beautiful home--even during a blizzard. In the evenings, the three of them would sleep together in the one room that had the kerosene heater--her perfumed mother hugging and kissing her on the one side, and her dad with the rough whiskers dong the same on the other."They sang me a lullaby. I could smell Mama’s perfume on her neck as I snuggled and gave her little kisses that made her hold me tighter. Her hair tickled my face as she moved, and I could hear the smile in her voice. I could feel Papa’s big fingers running through my hair and the stubble on his cheek as he gently kissed me. Our nightly ritual closed with their telling me, 'We love you higher than the skies, deeper than the oceans, and bigger than the whole wide world.'"Lebanon was the richest country in the Middle East. Christians and Muslims lived together in harmony. However, as time passed, Brigitte became aware of the dark side of multiculturalism."We were so deluded with our multiculturalism that we did not realize the risk of losing the very culture we prided ourselves on having. We did not realize that the intolerant Islamic side of our culture was gaining strength on the back of our Western openness and pride in diversity. With our open-border policy, we unwittingly allowed what would turn out to be our enemy to infiltrate our society to plot and fight with radicals within to gain control of our government. .... The problems started in 1968, shortly after Lebanon accepted its second wave of Palestinian refugees."At the age of ten, when the first barrage of rockets was launched by the Muslims, one exploded on their balcony. Another landed in Brigitte's bedroom, severely wounding her. “I woke up from the dream of a perfect childhood and found myself in a hellish nightmare."The remainder of the book is mostly devoted to describing the terror of she, her parents and their longtime friends all living together in a 10-foot x 12-foot bomb shelter.Toward the end of this time, when her mother becomes severely wounded and is dying from severe blood loss, a neighbor volunteers to drive Brigitte and her mom to an Israeli hospital across the southern border of Lebanon. As a result of what turns out to be a three week stay, Brigitte learns that Israelis--the first she had ever met--are nothing like she had been told in Lebanon. Instead, they are the kindest and most generous people she had ever known.Because of her experiences with professional women in the hospital, Brigitte becomes aware that, despite being a woman, she too has the potential to become a professional--and does so. I'll stop here so as not to ruin the story for others. As is obvious from the cover of her book, Ms. Gabriel is very concerned not to say terrified that Americans are going to become aware of the dangers of large-scale Islamic immigration to the US only when it is too late for them to avoid the fate that she experienced in Lebanon.

Bowman and Topps go head to head in the bubble gum card wars of 1951 to1955, fighting over player contracts, card designs, and in the courtroom. Card size increases as the set sizes decrease as fewer players are available to each of the competitors. Coaches, umpires, and utility players appear on cards to fill-in the sets. Ted Williams lands a big contract as Stan Musial holds out. Topps eventually buys Bowman and promptly reduces the cards' size, the number of cards in a pack, and creativity declines while maintaining a monopoly for the next quarter century. The author reviews each card set, year by year, noting developments and changes.

I tore through this rather short book in a weekend. The details on the 1950s sets is spectacular, and it's clear the author has a passion for the game of baseball and collecting cards. The lack of pictures is a bit frustrating (likely a licensing issue), so it sent me to Google many times to see what the author was describing... something he did quite well.Still, there are issues with the writing and editing. There are some sentences over flowing with unnecessary punctuation (usually commas), while others that need them are lacking. Also, there are many incomplete sentences.Ex. (P. 131 in "The Men in Black")"Kids who had already bought the previous two series full of players and had no interest in the coach and umpire-heavy last series."There is either a second half of that sentence missing, or the first "and" should not be there.Given the subject matter, it's not a huge deal. But, it makes some sections a bit difficult to interpret.Still, the biggest roadblock in getting through the book is the numerous times the author advertises his website. A quick scan back through gave me no fewer than 15 references to it. One or two would have sent me there... 15 makes me actively avoid it.

Dean has done a truly masterful job in documenting the hidden history of the baseall card wars of 1950-1955. I believe that this manuscript could be expanded upon with some documented interviews with some of the major players of that time. Back in the day there were ball players who interacted with the Sy Bergers of the world. These encounters relating to the card wars could be further amplified and collected for a new book. More of this historical information would make an already great read and contribution to baseball card history but it could be elevated to classic status. Terrific job Dean your efforts are recognized and greatly appreciated. Jimmy R.

The Bubble Gum Card War answered a ton of questions I have had since I began completing my sets from the 50's! Born in 1945, the 50's were my little league/Babe Ruth league years playing baseball, buying, "flipping", and collecting cards. After reading Dean's Bubble Gum Card War, I now understand why some cards are so hard to find, ie. short prints; why there were no Topps football cards before 1955; what happened to Bowmen cards; why certain stars like Ted Williams, Stan Musial, etc. were not on cards every year, etc., etc. I am presently an avid collector, and have "filled in" most of my sets from the 50's. The Bubble Gum Card War really helped, and Dean's Cards is my online source for hard to find cards.

Dean did his homework for this book; from the phone interviews to the library digs, this book has loads of great information that should entertain both card collectors as well as business book readers. I bought the print version of this book hoping that it would include pictures, which I'm disappointed that it did not. Baseball cards are by definition, pictures and this book would have been perfect if had those photos included. Another issue with the print version is the references in the back have some pretty convoluted links; perhaps using bit.ly or tinyurl would make them easier for us to enter into a browser. I'm sure they are perfect for kindle users though. One last issue is that Dean seems to really want us to visit his website deanscards.com, it's mentioned so often so much so that it becomes a bit spammy. All in all very informative and enjoyable read.

Anyone who might consider themselves even a novice baseball collector must include this in their reference library.Thank you, greatly.

Excellent!

If you love vintage cards as I do, you will enjoy this book. I had no idea the big fight to sell started cards in 1948. I have now started a new jouney putting together a 1948 Bowman PSA 5 or better.
