If you want inspiration for surface pattern design, this is a fantastic resource! All images are black and white and very clear to reproduce. The only text is in the introduction. Fifteen chapters of designs: Stone Age Europe, Neolithic Europe, Mesopotamia, Egyptian, Minoan, Mycenaean, Greek, Chinese, Early Celtic, Barbarian, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Japanese, and Art Deco. Obviously, some chapters denote time periods, where the later chapters are styles (Romaneque, for example) that prevailed in the culture.No one can tell for sure where one period ends and another begins and throughout history, each culture is influenced by another. But this book will give you a good starting point with which to describe the patterns you see in a design and, in some cases, the time period (the first 3 chapters) of the patterns that you see today. I'm not a Zentangle fan only because they seem to be pretentious in the pattern naming schemes, taking ancient patterns and motifs and making up new names for them. This book is a great reference in demystifying the REAL origin of patters and motifs. You'll find, however, that one book won't be enough. Another good book, if you want more historical information as well as great images is "Designs and Patterns From Historic Ornament" by W. and G. Audsley. Also, if you like paisleys, dots, and swirls check out ANY book about Mehndi art. Mehndi art is ancient art of painting the hands, feet, and sometimes other parts of the body for celebratory purposes. Great design inspiration there too.I've included 3 photos to give you a rough idea of the contents of the book. The first 5 pages are words, the rest are all filled with images!

This is a great book for helping generate your own ideas for designs. One reviewer was disappointed that the designs are copyrighted and cannot be used for commercial purposes. Since I am trying to create some designs for possible commercial use, I am using the book only as a source for ideas, that is a "jumping off" place to make an interesting design of my own, without infringing on the copyright. I think this book is a great source of ideas for your own creations, as well as providing designs straight from the pages for personal use. As long as you keep in mind that all the designs are hand drawn and in black and white, and you either want to use the designs in your personal creations or as an inspiration to create new designs, in my opinion you will not be disappointed.

I am a fiber artist and enjoy creating with fabric. Just looking thru the book inspires me and carries me onto new and different ideas. The size of the book reinforces the idea that creativity is endless!

This is a great book for anyone who needs any kind of reference with patterns. It even gives you on some of them a small step by step on how to do it.I had used it back in college and finally decided to purchase it after many year. Much better than researching patterns and motifs online.

I purchased this book for art ideas, and there are a lot of motifs in here. Unfortunately,many of the designs do not appeal to ME, so I had to give it 3 stars and that is the only reason. Others might like more of the designs than I do. I wish this book had the "look inside" feature.

If ever a book forced a reader to consider the vagaries of life, and what life is all about, this is it. Moreover, I thought that Mr. Galli had an excellent writing style, straightforward, muscular and unflinching, just right for this incredibly sad story. I also thought that the notes of support from the Galli's friends and acquaintances were a real addition to the book. They show us not only the meaning of what it is to have close friends, but perhaps as importantly, how people instinctly can pull together to support and rally around those who they may not even count as close friends, but who are mere acquaintances. I did have a few very minor quibbles. One is that I was surprised that there was hardly any discussion whatsoever about how the accident actually happended. All we are basically told is that Jeffrey dove into a pool and hit his head. Well if I dive into the deep end of a 10-foot pool, I'm not going to hit my head, so that is obviously not what happened here. But what did happen? Did he "dive" into the shallow end. That doesn't seem so likely. Did he not know how deep it was? Did he not stick his arms out to break the fall? I recognize that the "how" is not the point of the book, but I would have expected to see at least a paragraph or two as to exactly what happened (or even to tell the reader that they don't actually know what happened). Second, while I thoroughly admired the way in which Mr. Galli dealt with this tragedy, I found his own self-regard somewhat off-putting. I don't mean this in the sense of how thoughts or emotions or acts in terms of Jeff's situation per se. Rather, it seemed as if, when dealing with aspects of his life not directly involving Jeff (i.e the author's pre-accident life), I felt that he was not lacking in self-praise as to his panoply of talents. I could be wrong about that of course, but that was the sense I had. Despite that, I still feel that the book is a real achievement and Jeff is lucky to have such a father.

When a tragedy such as the one Richard Galli experienced in his family occurs, the family is expected to nod in agreement at platitudes from well-meaning aquaintences such as , "At least he's still alive." But sometimes we're not truly glad our loved one is alive. Sometimes our love is so deep and the prognosis is so bad that we want to say, "NO!" But it is rare to have the courage to admit it if our society would be more cmfortable otherwise.Richard Galli obviously shared his feelings with rare honesty. He didn't tell a sappy story that would make us feel better. He told the truth. It is apparent that he didn't write for the popular commercial success, but for more personal and intimate reasons. Those who dare to read it with an open heart can benefit from his bravery in sharing his thoughts and feelings with no regard for what anyone not in his situation might think.

To do justice to this book, read it with an open, searching heart. Then ask yourself, as this author did, what would YOU feel and what would YOU do if your child, an adolescent, was left paralyzed from the neck down? In those first days when your child couldn't even speak what would you think about? That's the painful situation author Richard Galli found himself facing after his son Jeffrey was paralyzed after a freak accident in a swimming pool, an accident which left him unable to move from the neck down. This account is a heartfelt, painfully honest description of the first ten days after the accident (when Jeffrey is basically unconscious) and what many readers have found hard to believe is how Jeffrey's father could contemplate ending his son's life. But I understood how his understanding of the life his son had lived before the accident and the horror of the life his son would lead afterwards, in all their limitations, could lead him to contemplate his son's death. In the end, it is Jeffrey himself who is the final determinant of his life or death. I won't give away the ending but simply recommend you read this one.

This is a compassionate and compelling story, a must for everyone to read. I admire Mr. Galli and would never want to be in his shoes. I wept while I read, identifying very much as I have sons and he lets you know just how in a minute your world can change drastically. A must read for everyone. This is a poignant story, one everyone should read. When so many people gripe and complain about their so-called ailments, this book makes it very clear that but for the grace of God, there go I. Definitely worth purchasing! I recommend it to everyone.

This memoir was heart wrenching and made a person think about how easy they have it in life. I would reccommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading. It was very easy to read and went fast! It also shipped quite quickly and was at my house just in time for my college class that needed it

My 2nd grade son ABSOLUTELY loves these books!! And I actually enjoy hearing them. He sat glued to the kindle for an hour the other day!! (I have the others in hard copies) The humor is sarcastic, awesome and perfectly inappropriate for a 2nd grader and keeps him engaged. My favorite part is how many nice challenging words are in there expanding his vocabulary! I bet some of the words would challenge my 7th grader. LOVE LOVE LOVE this book and all the books in this series. Not for the easily offended** Lots of bathroom humor*** Lots of books in the series if they love one they can keep reading!! AWESOME!!

My son loves this book series. He will literally read a whole book in one sit. I've checked them out and can see where they are entertaining. My son is in second grade and these are definitely fostering his love of reading.

We had to download this book because we left the hardcopy at home and my son wanted to read it while out of the house. It kept him laughing and entertained for hours!

My 8 yr old boy could read -but he just did not want to.But this year, our school started a required reading log where all 3rd grade students had to read 100 minutes a week.I was running out of Ranger Rick magazines... when he brought one of these books home from his school library. He was so engrossed in this book that I would talk to him and he just simply did not hear me. I would hear him chuckling and sometimes laughing out loud as he read on and on.... and on. I would tap him on the shoulder and tell him that that his reading time was up and he could go back to his video game. And I kid you not, he shrugged his shoulders and went back to the book!While filling out the reading log for him, I took a good look at the book. It is not a pretty book, but it sure did capture his reading drive. The wording was age appropriate and it encourages him to to read with feeling... yelling, questions, whispers,....A sense of humor is a good thing... I will definitely sponsor this series for him.

I learned so much about life from this book...definitely a great device to encourage the Smart-Alek'd kid to enjoy reading. Also, I must comment on the 'crude' nature (not nasty or anything, but perhaps 'un-polished' is a better word). I think kids can relate to this series of books because it's kinda how they write & understand words at their age (mine is a 7-yr old boy).Yes, Capt. Underpants books are..yes, crude (in the potty-mouthed way), but they have a good plot & just have a way of drawing my son into'the fray' of reading.

My daughter absolutely loves this series! Before this series getting her to read anything was like pulling teeth. To get her to even consider reading these we started reading a few chapters per night before bed. Now she wants to get into bed a little earlier so that she can read a little more. As a member of a very large family of book lovers, I couldn't be happier! They're silly books full of potty humor and intentionally misspelled words (bits of comic books that are supposed to be written by little kids). I think they're cute and it is opening my daughter up to the wonderful world of books.

Best set of books for a boy to read. My grandson was ok with reading until he received these books. He Loves them and rereads them. Worth every sent because you have to read to succeed in life. The humor in these books are priceless.

Wendy Pfeffer is the author of many science-oriented children’s books, including From Tadpole to Frog and A Log’s Life, which won the Giverny Award for Best Children’s Science Picture Book. An early-childhood specialist, she enjoys visiting schools and teaching creative writing to children. She lives with her husband, Tom, in New Jersey, where the change of seasons allows them to sail and swim in summer, then cross-country ski after the winter solstice welcomes winter each year. Linda Bleck grew up in a family of nine children in northern Illionois, and their Thanksgiving feasts were celebrated at a table her father made from a large door. Today, Ms. Bleck is making memories with her own children in Wisconsin, where the fall’s brilliant colors of changing leaves and crisp blue skies, as well as visits to local fruit and pumpkin farms, provide her with the inspiration to create her vivid illustrations. This book has information about the history of the time of harvest from different cultures around the world and it also includes some activities you can do with your child. Overall it's a good book, however, the depiction of the first American Thanksgiving wasn't historically accurate. It depicts it on friendly terms....I sort of wished they hadn't even touched on the subject actually. But overall, if you skip over the Thanksgiving pages, I think it's good.

This is not a read all at once book. It is best to do a little bit at a time, discuss, do hands on activities, etc. then come back the next day and do the next section. In fact, this would make a great week-long unit. Book covers an equinox, how its related to harvest time, the history of harvesting, various harvest celebrations around the world, and some hands on things to do like making equinox muffins/cupcakes or using a flashlight on a globe to see how light changes due to the tilt of the earth. Overall. its a nice book with lots of great facts and its better than anything else I have seen on the market regarding this topic (fall equinox). THere is a list of other cultural celebrations to research as well which might be a fun group project.Cautions: For parents, please consider the following context before buying the book. Many of the cultural harvest celebrations include offerings to moon gods, sun gods, rain gods, ancestors, etc. No worship of the Biblical god was mentioned for the pilgrim's story even though faith played a key role. The Biblical God was mentioned in the Jewish festival.

My children love books about fall, as well as non-fiction books, but this did not hold their interest very well. I thought the illustrations were well done, though. If you come from a Biblical world view, it might be helpful to know that this book dates events from an old Earth perspective, and introduces different cultures worshiping sun gods and rain gods.

I bought this for my five year old, when he had some questions about the equinox. We found it overly wordy, presenting too much information, and fairly dull. We got through about half before I asked him if he was bored, and I was relieved when he said yes, because I was bored too!

A kids' text, no matter how nice and photogenic, has a a linear feel to it.The first impression I had after several readings of this book was that itflowed from the storybook like descriptions of the festivals, but did nothalt suddenly for the science explanations. I think to gather kids who likeone but not the other (storybooks or science) this is a good crossover book.As a reader I liked the nostalgic illustrations. As a person who teaches andtutors second language learners, I liked the compreshensible text with vocabulary not too difficult and not overly simplified for the ESL,ELL andEFL 'world'. I especially liked the easy to understand instructions forexperiments and the recipe.Homeschoolers and tutors should find the in-book lesson plan ideas andfestival follow ups very clear and inviting to use the book as a teachingtool.As a long time resident of Japan, I had an instant memory clip of thefascination I had for moon viewing. The very early royals built moonviewing rooms in their palaces and even today their are moon viewingexcursions for the sentimal. In that ever festivaling country, thelantern and moonviewing celebrations are of the most evocative.For children rasised in the city, this is a good introduction to how foodis harvested and celebrated around the world.For parents interested in interesting ways to present diversity, it isdeligtful. I would recommend it without hesitation.

I have several books on raising and caring for cattle, but purposely didn't buy "The Family Cow" because it seemed cheesy. I was wrong. The other books in my collection are focused on larger scale beef or dairy operations, calving and veterinary care. I couldn't find information on how to feed and handle one or two cows that are kept for dairy and possibly beef. "The Family Cow" was the book I was looking for. The dynamics and considerations for a hobby farm-type situation are entirely different than for keeping a large herd. The book doesn't go into nitty-gritty detail, but provides a nice level of information for the close level of interaction you have when you are hand milking, mixing feed and monitoring the health of a couple of cows. I would recommend this book for anyone at the beginning to intermediate level of livestock keeping.

This book was not only inspiring and reassuring to read the first time for first time milkers, it has become a reference goldmine for all things milk cow. It was also an revealing look at the history, governmental diminishment, and eventual popular reemergence of the family milk cow. Amply and simply illustrated no-nonsense text on everything from the raw vs. pasteurized debate to milking technique and milk product recipes. Lots of charts and graphs and anatomical renderings for thoroughly understanding the animal and the functions of milk production at home. There isn't a question that's come up that I couldn't find the answer to in this book and we have a happy Family Cow because of it.

After owning my first cow without knowing any of the basics, this book is invaluable to me. The information on how and what to feed my cow and calf helped me immensely. I wandered from feed store to feed store trying to obtain information on what to feed my dairy cow. The chapter on nutrition includes diagrams of the ruminant digestive system, which helped me understand why the right diet would protect my cow's health, and make her more productive over the years. There are great stories about how to choose your own family cow, and how to match the animal with your capabilities, farm and goals.Consider this book a necessity for your farm library.

Lots of good information and practical ideas. An easy read. I wish I had read this book before I purchased a young Jersey heifer calf. I would have looked for an older one. I will have to wait for a long time to get any milk from this one. However, I WILL have enough time to prepare for the arrival of the future calf and for the items I will need for milking.

Lots of good information for those wanting to get a family milk cow. As a companion book to "Keeping a Family Cow" By Grohman, it seems to be everything a person needs to know. I think "The Family Cow" is a little more practical. I enjoy Dirk van Loon's writing style, informative and sometime humorous.

I keep re-reading this book, each time I learn something new. It offers real world advice on what to expect. We haven't made the leap yet to owning our own family cow, but with this knowledge...I feel more confident in my ability to do so in the future. Thanks for sharing a wealth of almost, long lost knowledge...this book is important reference material!

I purchased this book before getting my first cow. I like that the author writes it for the person that may not want to spend a ton of money outfitting. A rope, a bucket, and a desire to have a cow is all you need to get started, sure makes it less intimidating than the more scientific books. highly recommended, but be prepared to have to do more specific research as it is a rather general book. The chapters on feeding are very detailed.

I've just got an old dairy cow and I have learned a lot about her from this book. Granted it's old school, but with my limited knowledge it seems relevant still to raising cows today. And the pics in the book help too to understand better. It explains many different aspects of dairy cows and cows/calves in general. Definitely recommend it!

So. Good. Get this book if you just started. I just bought an 8-harness jack loom and this, my friends, has been a comprehensive and yet totally understandable lifesaver!

This book is directed towards those who want to learn how to use a 4 harness table loom or a floor loom. The author writes very clear instructions in a lesson format. This can be difficult for some people to understand. The book has a large amount of easy to understand illustrations as well as good black and white photos. I like the fact that the book covers many advanced skills like how to weave different types of twills, lace, using multiple wefts, etc. The drafting and pattern sections are really good. Good weaving requires that a weaver understand pattern reading and this book covers this aspect really well. All in all this is a good book for an "advanced beginner". A person who has never weaved before may have a problem in understanding the process without reading the chapters a gazillion times.

This book saved me a lot of time and money. I had YouTube pages marked, searched for books and websites to help me understand 4 harness weaving, warping, everything to develop a clear understanding of every part of weaving on my loom so that I could solve any 'opportunities for learning' that might arise. I was not able to find everything in one place, until this book.She takes you very clearly through the parts of the loom, using a warping board, warping front to back, back to front, different tie ups, tabby, twill, overshot, summer, winter, etc. She does much of this in the form of lessons.This book has built my knowledge and my confidence. This is a must have for anyone using a floor loom.

I will need to grow into this book...I only have table looom and skills with single heddle. But this book seams easy to read and understand. Nice explanation of complex topics and great series of references to pattern for floor looms. I can't wait to be good enough with my hobby to really use this book.

I purchased a paperback version of the "Learning to Weave" by Debbie Redding and Deborah Chandler. This is an economical way to buy this classic reference. The spine is a spiral so it is easy to keep the book opened to any page you want.The book is extremely detailed, from position of the hands when you dress the dress to numerous illustrations on various topics. I am attaching a photo of the page addressing the topic of warping the yarn. The amount of fine details and explanations is better than in any other book I read. I had high expectations based on everything I heard about this book and it totally lived up to my expectations.This book helped solve some beginner problems I had earlier. It made it easier and faster to dress the loom. And my weaving edges are looking better with floating selvedges, a technique I learned in this book! The chapter on troubleshooting and various options to fix mistakes is very helpful. This book also has a large section on various weaving patterns.I currently thinking about upgrading my first loom to a bigger one. I was pleased to find a chapter about buying the right loom for you. It has several useful considerations that I will keep in mind.I am sure I will be coming back to this book again and again. I purchased this book for about seven years at the recommendation of a good friend. Well, I finally took the plunge and got my loom. I was able to warp, dress my loom and weave my first project with her excellent instruction!!! She goes through all the terms (really a new language), the parts of the loom (another new language) clearly and precisely. Easy reading, along with assignments.

I bought this book a while ago when I was interested in learning to weave. I had bought a rigid heddle loom and had never woven anything before. The book was not very helpful for me on that loom, but I found a lot of the information in it to be very helpful. I had to read it over a few times, and some of the concepts did not click until I had actually gone to take lessons in weaving on a multi-shaft loom, but overall I think this book is a good basic book for those who have interest in weaving and want to learn some basics without a class.

The book is a bit dated. Pictures are in black and white and most are drawings of tools and equipment. Very 1980's not a learning style that I enjoy. I want to just learn there are to many words in between instruction. I have been going through the book and highlighting the stiff that matters so I don't have to read all the "blah blah" starting the first project now. I don't like the "blah blah" so much because it gets in the way of "how to." Is this the best beginner book out there?

This looks like a beautiful book for weaving with a four-shaft loom. Unfortunately I was looking for a book to get me started with a rigid heddle loom. I didn't pick up in the book description that rigid heddle looms were so different than a four shaft loom, so I ordered the book based upon the description and reviews as working for beginners. At this stage of my weaving education, this book is useless to me. I wish I had understood it was for weaving with a four shaft loom, not a rigid heddle loom.

I'm a longtime Keillor fan and he holds the top spot when it comes to the most carefully crafted stories ever written. "The Road Home" is another collection of his experiences transferred onto the little town of Woebegone with the new twist: He is now 75 years old and his topics deal more with retrospective assessments of birth, life, and death so the general feel of his delivery is not as lighthearted or optimistic. He still has his wonderful, mellow voice, and the recordings now pick up his breathing AND a little whistle that puts me in mind of dentures that perhaps need to be refitted. the first few cuts I listened to, I was feeling disappointed because he just sounded more like an old man, rambling about whatever was drifting thru his head at the time, but then he got back to his more recognizable style of actual story-telling. There was a clear beginning, middle and end, to each one, and I'm pleased to report, the END always carried the big payoff of a classic wrap to the originally introduced topic. He is still Number one in my book, and I will continue to purchase whatever he puts out on CD. I still go back to his absolute GOLD albums that contain the stories like "Bruno, the Fishing Dog", "My Aunt Ellie", "The TRUCK STOP"...well, you know if you are a fan exactly what I'm talking about.

Love this CD. Every story is a gem.First Paul Harvey dies. Then car talk goes. Then Letterman retires. Now Garrison leaves PHC.What is a guy supposed to do?

If you like the Lake Woebegone stories then you will like this compilation. Only issue with it was there was one track that apparently didn't get copied to the CD correctly. But I think there is like 36 stories on this set so having one that I couldn't listen to completely was not that big of an issue. I'm sure I could have tried returning and gotten a replacement but didn't try that.

A great edition to my collection. Keillor and Lake Wobegon stories are not only entertaining but full of down home common sense that many of us can identify.

As always, Garrison Keillor shows why he is a master storyteller. Be aware of one thing, however--in my set, disc 1 is labelled "Disc 3", and vice-versa. It may be limited to just one pressing. But once you figure that out, it doesn't detract in the least from the stories. UPDATE: When I contacted Highbridge Audio directly about the mislabeled discs, they quickly and cheerfully offered to replace them. A class act!
