I enjoyed this book very much. It seemed quite different from most novels to me, and I was in awe of the author's vocabulary and ability to write. She really captures the experiences and emotions of every person involved in this drama (which is the story of a boy's sudden death in an accident, and the subsequent donation of his heart.) An excellent read. Can you imagine how you might feel if your teenage son set off to go surfing, and a phone call later he was suddenly dead? De Kerangal captures every nuance of feeling - from the mother, father, girlfriend, staff, and then the same emotional panoply from the recipient of the heart. Treat yourself to this book.
I loved so much about this book it’s hard to know where to start. As a nurse I tend not to read any medical fiction because I get very critical when inevitably there are inaccuracies with how people and processes are portrayed. This book surprised me. As an ICU nurse I have participated in the organ procurement process and every storyline of this book was highly relatable. I loved the poetic nature of the prose and how all the emotions were conveyed from every character. On more then one occasion it brought me to tears because I could so clearly remember many of the feelings that were conveyed and the sacred nature of the work which is very difficult to articulate. Happy to see this author (and translator) was able to do just that. A wonderful thought provoking read.
An important book to read, because it deals with life's unpredictable turns. Set in France, where the laws are a bit different than ours in the US, it is an illustrative tale of how lives can change on a dime, for better and for much worse.
I join with Bill Gates in recommending this novel about the 24 hours in a heart transplant event, telling the story from each participant's view as the process unfolds. As one who has received my own heart transplant, almost 24 years ago now, I loved this read.

At a deeper level, it is about the emotions of the people involved.However, there are distractions...chapter that are probably supposed to provide emotional depth, but that I found interfered with the flow of the story. If there were symbolic connections, I missed at least some of them.The emotions are described truly and deeply. It took me a while to get over the author’s writing style...sentences that go on forever, paragraphs that never seem to end. But finally, I am glad I had the patience to stick with it.
all I can say is...if you have teenagers, especially boys who drive or drive with their friends, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK! It's very well-written, so well-written that it brings every parents worst nightmare to life with tremendous force. I've had nightmares ever since.
A page turner. This book is very interesting - it was a rare time when I wanted to read it page to page but also did not want to read more than a few pages because I did not want it to end. Some of the descriptions are so well described that I ended up reading them a couple of times to absorb and enjoy it thoroughly.
