Review

“Each single-page piece is a clever, funny, slightly bonkers riff on a literary theme.” ―The Times UK“Often intellectual, frequently absurd, always hilarious, they provide a whimsical and perceptive view of culture, literature, and life itself.” ―Design Week“A collective narrative that explores contemporary society in depth, forcing us to scrutinise ourselves and the realities we take for granted. More importantly they're just seriously funny.” ―It's Nice That“Tom Gauld is pretty brilliant. You're All Just Jealous of My Jetpack.. is ... dark and funny. Some of the best comics in the collection are the bookish ones, taking chummy digs at everyone from Martin Amis to the Brontës to "proper literature.” ―Flavorwire“These strips mix high culture with low, creating a rare alchemy that is pitch-perfect and full of fun. Gauld's comic strips are smart, silly and hilarious.” ―Cult Montreal“That Gauld is able to get so much of that across with so little is like the most disarming, confounding magic trick.” ―A.V. Club“[You're All Just Jealous of My Jetpack] consists of single panel cartoon that explore the passage of time, absurdism, and most of the 7 Deadly Sins, all presented with a sense of graceful whimsy that makes his work such a delight to read.” ―Boing Boing“Terrifically funny.” ―Paste Magazine“His economical art...is married to dry, incisive humor, making each strip a carefully composed marvel…[Gauld is] a cartoonist on par with Charles Addams and Gary Larson.” ―Publishers Weekly

I love Tom Gauld’s work. I wish this volume was bigger. Some cartoons are incredible but it seems to me that this had to be a bit beefier. Maybe like that old joke from Annie Hall: “the food in this restaurant is so bad. Yes and in such small portions.”. Except that Tom’s work is often great, but in such small portions!

If you liked Kate Beaton's book of comics, Hark! A Vagrant, then you'll love these even more. These are comics for readers with a literary turn and a dark sense of humor, as with the opening comic for the book:Frame 1: "A SHORT STORY" [no picture, just a title]Frame 2: Picture shows a person holding a manuscript standing before another person sitting at a desk. Captions as follows.1: "Will you publish my short stories?" 2: "No."Frame 3: "THE END." [no picture, just the print, in the same style as Frame 1]Moments of brilliance: (i) reimagining the opening of Great Expectations as a video game; (ii) "Professor Ian Rigby, Academic Stunt Driver"; (iii) "The Nature Critic Shares His Expert Knowledge"; (iv) "Uses of the Smartphone in Literature"; (v) "Why have you come back in time to Vienna in 1913?" and others.I will be giving this book to every reader I care about this winter.

Smart, witty humor. Often literary in nature, but you don't have to be especially well versed in literary history like you sometimes do with cartoonists that have a similar sensibility such as Kate Beaton. Gauld is witty and often wacky as well. Good stuff.

Hilarious. Requires some familiarity with literary classics; the comics can be esoteric, but if you're fairly familiar with Victorian literature, you'll get most of them. And they are very funny.

Totally cute! Tom Gauld's comics focus primarily on literature and art, but you don't have to have an MFA in order to appreciate the humor. Accompanying each witticism is a collection of precise and precocious drawings of people, objects and animals that will make you smile as much as the humor makes you laugh. Where else can you find robots, penguins and Charles Dickens?

What a clever, hilarious, charming book. It is rife with literary and historical references, so it may not be every comic-seeker's cup of tea, but its dry humor, intelligence, and understated design make this worth every penny.

Laugh-out-loud stuff! And a style the likes of I've not seen before. If you like "The Far Side" and "Hark A Vagrant," you'll like this book.

flat our funny!
