In Tatsumi's early career, he was interested in cyberpunk, and you can still see some of that interest shaping his approaches in Full Metal Apache. Whereas cyberpunk had some fascination with coincidence, you can see where Tatsumi has refined this particular vector in his research and moved to synchronicity. This is not in the exact Jungian sense of the word, although it is related in the sense that meaningful associations may be manifested through conceptual frameworks. It is this construction of new theory that lead to the J.G. Ballard-esque condensed criticism that you find in Full Metal Apache, a book I highly recommend. If you read any of Tatsumi's considerable work, you will quickly see, usually by the end of the first page, that his critical apparatus harvests from a wide variety of sources and he begins constructing an intertextual mecha, an assemblage of seemingly unrelated components that are worked into something that, like those magnificent powered suits, slips on easily and magnifies the user's agency in the world.

This book is the cultural critic's equivalent of a richly textured and nuanced novel. It is full of startling juxtapositions and imaginative leaps; it can transform the familiar into the strange and wonderful; and its point of view is witty and ironic and generous. It is as valuable to me for its insight into the complex relationship between Lafcadio Hearne and Japanese folklore as it is for its explication of the intricacies of twenty-five years of contemporary Japananese/American post-post-modernism. As I read it, I looked forward with pleasure to re-reading it with deepened understanding.

When I first heard of this book, I preordered and awaited it breathlessly. When it came earlier than I expected, I was thrilled. After I opened the pages, I found myself emerged in a dry, difficult-to-follow, academic book that is full of more quotes from other books than it has original text.I am not saying that Takayuki Tatsumi isn't knowledgeable on his subject, quite the opposite. I think perhaps he is too close to the subject to be able to write to a layman audience and it shows.My difficulties with the book ranged from it's style to references. Perhaps it is more for the academic minded; it was definitely published via an academic press, and definitely reads like a dissertation. I believe the author is somewhere between 10 and 15 years older than myself, creating a gap in the information streams in which we were exposed to. He makes reference to far too many movies/books/relevant figures (authors, playwrights, directors), etc, that I am simply not familiar with. And while normally this is not a problem, he fails to explain to my understanding who these people and their works are. I felt in the completely dark throughout this book.But perhaps the worse part was, it was a slow, painstaking read for the 200-odd pages of half-page text that graced the pages. It didn't help that I would have to stop again and again to consult online references to who people or their works were.Normally, I would give this kind of book only 1 star, but it covers two subjects I am very fond of: Japan and cyberpunk. So it gets an extra star, for anyone NOT deeply interested in these subjects, I recommend to steer clear away. This is not a casual read by any stretch of the imagination.

Studying this book in Sunday School class; ideas presented by 18th century minister, John Wesley, interpreted into modern day living by author, Reuben Job. I found this book to focus on the importance and biblical foundations of the three rules of the Wesleyan tradition. This book blessed me in a time I needed to learn what was offered in its pages. A simple but challenging call to follow Jesus more intentionally

Don't let the "Wesleyen Way of Living" part of the title throw you. This little book has application for all Christians. I was raised in the Methodist faith from age 4 to age 19, so I knew who John Wesley was, but not knowing who Wesley was or not being raised in a Methodist church would in no way limit the usefulness and/or impact of this book in any believers life. In fact, I am now the pastor in a non-denominational Protestant church and recently used this book as the basis for a three part sermon series. The three simple rules found in this book (Do no harm, Do good, Love God) are a powerful reminder to the experienced follower of Christ, a succinct distillation of Gospel truth for the new believer/young Christian and an attidote to the intellectual/ivory tower tripe and the "power" gospel that seems so pervasive in what passes for so called Christian literature and preaching/teaching today. This is a simple "life application" book that will benefit all who read it.

In my 63 years on this planet I have read practically everything there was to read about this enigmatic couple, particularly Wallis. The author presents her with a fresh outlook I found fascinating. It was a joy to read and kept my attention throughout. The author delved into different theories trying to explain, once again, how these two wildly separate people came to be inseparably entwined together, changing history with their meeting. I like the way the author kept the spotlight strictly on Wallis; her letters, physical appearance, jewelry, love of couture and diet was extremely interesting. She even brought out new insights into some well known facts about their lives and travails. The author does not sugar coat Wallis but also describes how her years of exile and rejection by Edward's family took their toll.I really found nothing negative to complain about. I found several of the author's theories very intriguing but even she stated that no one will ever no the real truth behind their attraction to each other. Maybe the book won't be taught in college but I found it to be a delightful read and well worth it.

Quite readable, but it is obvious throughout that the author wants to 'rehabilitate' Wallis Simpson, at least to the extent that people feel sympathy for her. I would rather have had a bit more evidence and less interpretation (especially the psychological speculations which at times seem to come out of nowhere). However,since actual evidence (diaries, letters, etc) is significantly lacking or not easily accessible, I suppose it is to be expected. Personally, I think a companion volume called The Man Who Never Wanted To Be King (But Always Wanted His Own Way) would go along way toward filling out the complete picture of a bizarre event in British history.

I was expecting lots more from this biography of Wallis Simpson, but aside from quoting from some of Wallis's more recently-discovered letters, Sebba does little but rehash the old familiar stories. The book focuses on the lead-up to the abdication crisis, with barely a nod to Wallis and Edward's post-abdication, post-Bahamas years. Sebba recounts in detail many of the salacious rumors about Wallis only to acknowledge reluctantly that they can't be proven. Wallis comes across as a hollow woman, but one who deserves better treatment at the hands of a biographer.

This was such an interesting book. I've read a little bit about Wallace Simpson, curious about her. Nothing that gave the background I found in this book. It genuinely helped to gain a measure of understanding. The part I found most impressive was that the information didn't feel biased. Facts were presented and a very readable and interesting history told. This was a person who had issues from her youth that she never gained perspective on. Those issues were her guiding force. What a shame she allowed herself to become the woman she did. Had she been able to channel her drive in some positive other way, whatever she chose she would have mastered. She chose to try to climb socially by using the men in her life, always seeking the next best financially secure situation she she could find. She unwisely ended up in a web of her own creation.Originally I had chosen the book because of its title. Assuming it to be a book that would be slanted only toward the British feeling toward Wallace Simpson. There is certainly information here that shows British feeling toward her. That feeling derives from the information itself, not the authors editorializing. The book also shows American perspective. I was very impressed. It would have been so easy to create a book that simply pictured her as a gold digger. The time was taken to relate background information. To tell her history without editorially slanting it. Absolutely a biography worth reading!

I didn't like this at all; it is so poorly written, it is almost incoherent, and there is so much cheap speculation that it reads like a supermarket tabloid. If you are interested in history, this is not your book.

Anne is one of the first, if not the first, woman to tackle the complex woman that Wallis was and the equally complex world Wallis lived within. Her treatment of Wallis is done with class and elegance, just as Wallis would have required. That said, Anne has some interesting theories about Wallis that could in many ways explain Wallis' behavior around men as well as women. And you really, 'feel,' for Wallis at some points, especially when it came to the royal family's 'regard' for Wallis. If you like a compelling story, a glimpse into the rarefied world of pre and post WWII royalty, this is the book for you!

Interesting reading. Don't know how accurate it was when it came to some medical conclusions on the Dutchess. Since there are no medical evidence to back up any claims ... All they do is throw doubt on to the entire book. As a result, I enjoyed reading this book, as a fluff piece ... Nothing more. If you want an historical piece, there are other works ... This should not be your first choice.

I haven't even finished reading this yet but it was a gift so I suppose I'll get through it eventually. A more accurate title would be "Wallis Simpson. Rumors I've heard and things I'm guessing at". Some things that are presented as "facts" don't give a source. Sometimes the author brings up a point and then drops it. Example: Wallis wrote that she and Mary Kirk continued their friendship after boarding school but the author says that "in private" Mark Kirk said otherwise. Then she drops it. Many pages later (seemed like forever) we learn of a rocky time between them. Maybe this is Mary's version? Who knows? The author didn't say. Maybe in another 10 chapters she will. The writing is difficult. Many sentences are so long they don't keep the readers attention. The author poses the possibility that Wallis had a physical condition but has no proof of it. In spite of having no proof she's determined to convince her readers that it must be true. As I said, this book was a gift so I will try to get through it. Please wish me luck.

I have the 4th edition (at this time is the most recent edition in print) and as a psych home care nurse, this little, portable wealth of knowledge has helped me validate to management, as well as to public health and other surveyors, the range in situations that qualify "homebound status" for psychiatric patients. Throughout the book there are samples provided to support a variety of situations that help the nurse better understand, and therefore more accurately report, on each sector of the OASIS forms. Medicare regulations are explained in detail, and I learned information that I had not known in the 14 years I have been doing mental health home care nursing. The manual provides a history and background of homecare, its evolution, provides an overview of documentaion, including the importance of coding, and its significance in home care. Also, valuable tips on improving the nursing visit, setting achievable goals, managing the case, and the guidelines for care for all the home care disciplines, are provided, so the nurse can be knowledgable regarding the roles of the other disciplines. There is a great resource section at the end of the book, and home care definitions, roles, and abbreviations are delineated in this manual as well. All home care codes are listed.With the often-confusing regulations and data gathering tools out there, at least we on the front lines have this portable manual to help us sort out our assessments and evaluations into the accurate coding and leveling criteria that supports what we do, what we observe, and allows for the appropriate revenue to support the levels of care our patients require. As OASIS data-gathering evolves, newer editions will be needed to keep up with the miriad of changes that will ensue, but at least here is a standard we can all make good use of, and I am willing to bet every nurse, from novice to manager, will find something in this manual that was not known or delineated as well to them in the past.This manual would also make a wonderful teaching tool for nursing students. They may as well learn early on how intricate the data-gathering tools are in the real working world. Accurate notations on the OASIS forms can either make or break a case, not only regarding reimbursement, but as to whether the levels of care, and variety of disciplines, that you feel are needed, are allowed to provide services to your patient. Hasty and inaccurate translation of evaluations and assessments onto the OASIS forms results in inability to justify to Medicare that the levels of intervention you are requesting are appropriate.

I bought this book after a positive review in the NYT. It is a weird insider book with little to redeem it except an occasional play with words. Most of it makes no sense, the stories are not stories but incomplete impressions of a truly narcissistic author. I tried very hard as an open minded reader to find some redeeming feature but besides her friends who indulged her or reviewers who pretended to be elites in the know this is a waste of money mess.

The stories made little sense. She used some interesting phrases and ways of saying things. the stories didn't lead anywhere nor did they encourage me to reflect on their connection to anything else. I read it based on a positive review that said she captured the spirit of the times very well. I missed it completely.

I can’t call this a review, because I am far from fair about the book. It is written in a style critics seem to love and I do not. For the same reasons I love well-developed setting, I despise what seems to me to be precious, I’m-so-smart-and-rich dialogue. Even when it is as well-written as this. So all I can say is that I only made it about half way before I closed it with great finality.

I'm usually not one for short stories. How many writers can put a mini-story - with characters and plots - into the 50 or so pages most short stories run? But Deborah Eisenberg has written six mini-stories that are incredibly readable in her new book, "Your Duck is My Duck". If there is a theme to the stories, it's probably the fact that most of the main characters are in a point of personal transition.I didn't like all six stories; I thought "The Third Tower" was a bit too science-fictiony for my taste. But the others, and most particularly "Recalculating", were tiny gems which were like snapshots into the characters' lives. In "Recalculating", Adam a young man raised on an Iowan farm, discovers an uncle he had never known while going through family pictures. Philip had left the farm early and had moved "away", returning only once. A few years pass and Adam is out of college and beginning his own journey away from Iowa. He hears about his now-famous uncle's death in London and decides to go to his memorial service. The time is the 1980's and Philip's family back home had been told he had died of "pneumonia". Adam's trip to London enmeshes him in Philip's world - a world he finds to his liking. The characters in "Recalculating" are brilliantly drawn; spare but full of life.The other five stories are as well written as "Recalulating". I'm going to look for Eisenberg's backlist.

Excellent, bittersweet grasp of all that is great and kooky about contemporary society in America and beyond. No “Happily ever After” or resolution or closure: an acceptance of life’s complexities and disappointments, artfully rendered.

Led to this collection of six short stories by Giles Harvey’s “Deborah Eisenberg, Chronicler of American Insanity” in The Times. The draw, one more writer chronicling America slippage from the world it formed to the one we must all now live in. Disappointed in the first story until awaken by ‘corporate executives’ but can not remember the story at all now; wrong mindset for carefully created word play for sure. Six reactions below but each reader will form its own and other reviewers will see what literary critics treasure most likely.Your Duck Is My Duck. nice?Taj Mahal ageingCross Off and Move On. those other people sweet endingMerge. cramped confided space of NYCThe Third Tower. cleaver suggestive of coming horror or technocratic realityRecalculating. rich and revealing age in a gentle mood reappearsGiles Harvey mentions that Eisenberg, at 72, notes that age yields rewards along with the rest, pleasures not know before this old reviewer would agree. She writes of what she is capable of knowing and that is her gift. You may enjoy it if you share her background.

This woman writes the socks off others. She’s now one of my favs and I read two or three good books a week. If you are partial to great literary fiction this is it.

It is because I read in The New York Times a wonderful review of this new collection that I immediately bought it for my Kindle. Short stories are perfect for those of us with ADD!

This book does a great job of laying out the particulars of one of the greatest mysteries of the last century. I have a much better grasp now of what actually occurred to these nine who died with no explanation. There have been many theories on what happened at the Dyatlov Pass but I can't say any other book lays out the details as nicely as Death of Nine. And while there is a ton of detail here the book is an easy read. The author lays out the specifics on the individuals who died, their routes, how they went about their days, what they did prior to passing and what investigators found - and didn't find. If you remotely think you might like to know more about the the Dyatlov Pass mystery don't pass on this book. As a side note this book is a great looking book in hand. It has the look and feel of a book from years past which helps take you take you back to this simpler time of this tragedy.

This book is particularly informative as it gives details and diagrams of the autopsy findings of the nine victims. These findings tended to convince me that these were murders carried out by human beings. Theories involving UFO's, Russian military experiments, avalanches, sound waves, Yeti, etc. seem far fetched. The idea that the Mansi tribal members were responsible as they were enraged by the group trespassing on their sacred religious ground is dismissed as that would be totally inconsistent with the previous behavior of the Mansi. There was the usual official Russian behavior to suppress the investigation and to hurry the conclusion that the deaths were due to "overwhelming force." The author of this book states his THEORY as to the cause of the murders is speculative but it is highly interesting. I recommend this book highly.

This is clearly well compiled and thought out. While I don’t necessarily agree or disagree with the conclusion the author presents, her argument is well reasoned. The only substantial improvement I would suggest for her next nonfiction book is citations and a bibliography. This would help strengthen her Dyatlov case as well. That aside, she’s a good writer and she has more than convinced me she’s looked at this from lots of angles.

The 1959 deaths of 9 young Russian "tourists" (hikers) in winter has been the subject of many books. I have read all of them with great interest, and I feel this book comes very close to solving the mystery. Mr. Anderson discusses all of the popular theories and takes a deep look at the autopsy results and and reveals shocking patterns. The book is well-written and I recommend it to anyone who has pondered the baffling deaths of these exceptional people.

Very concise account of the Dyatlov murder. The author presents an extremely well thought out case for foul play from an external source being the cause of this mysterious death of the 9 hikers. Very fact based and closing theories are well thought out.

A good review of the incident with evidence summarized in detail. The conclusion seem more plausible than some I have read--no yetis. The only negative is that the typeface is small on my Kindle and apparently cannot be adjusted.

This is my favorite book, of a few, that I have purchased on the Dyatlov Pass incident. It is less so for the beginner, and rather more so for the intermediate student of the incident. In the book Mr. Anderson includes much detail, along with numerous superb photos, and even of the bodies. Full autopsies are at the back, along with Anderson's summary and discussion of them in the main part of the book. The bodies ended up to be key evidence, of course. Theories as to what happened are examined, along with an introduction to each of the nine hikers. All in all, a superb book on the incident and highly recommended.

Well written and meticulously researched, Launton Anderson brings the past to life in this nonfiction thriller. The book starts in a Soviet era polytechnic university hiking club in the 1960s, and traces the doomed hikers on their journey, first to the abandoned mining town that served as the base camp for their expedition, then to the campsite deep in the Siberian wilderness where they met their grisly end. Even though you know how it is going to end, the book is a gripping page turner from beginning to end. Highly recommended.

Fooled by Randomness revolutionized how I view the world. In multiple ways. It's hard to overstate how rarely a book changes your ideas about how the world works once, let alone multiple times, and that Taleb has managed to weave a fantastically engaging and entertaining book out of what could very easily be a dry and technical topic is just icing in the cake.I've read all four of Taleb's books and Fooled By Randomness still stands out as my favorite. Although Black Swan is still the most popular, and most controversial, Fooled in many ways is the most practical, as it's the most general and therefore most widely applicable. Everyone should deeply understand the survivorship and hindsight biases, as well as the difference between conditional and unconditional probability.That being said, it's often hard to determine whether the heart of the book is the ideas (which to someone such as myself who has only a Stats 101 background in probability are almost always revelation-inducing) or the author. I can't stress how much I learned from this book that has nothing to do with probability or statistics, just random asides from an erudite and meandering mind. Regardless of your background (or even your interest in probability) you will probable learn some fascinating and/or useful tidbit from Fooled, and probably a whole lot more.

Bad news. You are a fool about to be fooled. Again. And again. Just like everybody else. We are a species of fools. What a circus! But Taleb is a special kind of fool, foolish enough to write an essay on how randomness fools us. Interesting fool, nay? The whole thing feels like a foolish attempt to make us better fools. Even his methodology writing this book is foolish. Speaking his mind and having fun. Fool, fOOl, FOOL! Outrageous even for a brave fool. If you don't take yourself too seriously (say a foolish fool), this book is damn entertaining. Otherwise, this book is very insulting for serious fools. Seems that our carbon-based machinery fails us dealing with the abstract tools (say probability theory) we have been developing to understand nature (say since Pythagoras; just to finish with a foolish guess). Enjoy, you fool.

I know many I think might profit from reading this book. I know few who'd be likely to agree with my assessment, especially after they had read it. With that in mind, how many stars does it deserve? I like it better than the Black Swan.The author has thought deeply about risk and uncertainty. Before reading this I thought I had too. No longer. Perhaps reading this while young would produce a more positive asessment of its value but in one's later years it is more depressing than enlightening. Yes, most of us are fools so what's new in that? Will any readers be made less foolish by reading this? That is really the question.

I really like Nassim's rebel disposition and skepticism when it comes to science. I do, like many people, lean on science to get me closer to the truth. Sometimes too much. Nassim challenges this position based on his experience as a trader and what he's observed over the course of his life. He demonstrates how theories may simply be the theorizer being fooled by random events. That is, the common problem of correlation being mistaken for causation. He's certainly changed my mindset to be more skeptical of elaborate theorizing and to look at the world with more of a bottom-up approach. That is, if something works, knowing the theory of why, doesn't make it necessarily any more valid.

Taleb is of course famous for avoiding bull or bear trend naked bets and protecting himself for black swan events like big bank crashes. His revision of this book was needed but is long read for non-academics.Somewhat personal lifestyle story but serious warnings like those of George E P Box that "all models are wrong, but some are useful." But Taleb adds that modern derivatives and options that lose most of the time but win big infrequently are a great strategy for those with means and patience while crashes wipe out the rest of the naked speculators big time. Enjoyed the ideas and stories. Academics will appreciate the well selected references and explanations of why only are a few have "useful models" in the big human-centric gambling casino that is Wall Street. Economics in general is a fuzzy world to model compared to more deterministic factory machines. So don't stop using statistical methods in that latter world. But protect yourself from human factors in the financial world..

I can tolerate the ego-maniacal writing style, but I cannot abide the enormous errors the author commits when he delves into science.To wit: Taleb posits that Einstein proved Newton wrong. Not true. Einstein showed that Newtonian mechanics failed at the extremes - extremely large (cosmologic) and extremely small (atomic distances). Further, he posits that the poor schlep scientist's odds of success continue to increase as he does more mouse experiments. Untrue if the hypothesis under which the scientist is proceeding is ultimately incorrect. And finally, the author accepts global warming as a given and castigates science for not having recognized the truth of it from random weather events. Taleb, stick your knitting. It's one thing to be ignorant, but another to open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
